  • Mono setup

I'm trying to figure out my future mono setup and wondering if any has experience with some of the cartridges or SUT's that I'm looking at. I am ordering a VPI Avenger this week. My phono stage is the Zesto Andros 1.2, which has one MC input and one MM input. My stereo cart is the Ortofon Cadenza Red (which goes is currently going in the MC input of the Zesto). Was thinking of keeping the "ortofon" house sound and ordering a Cadenza Mono cartridge and then a Ortofon Verto SUT going into the MM input on the Zesto. (I could also use the Verto with Cadenza Red into MM which gives me some flexibility). The other mono cartridge in the same price range is the Miyajima Premium BE cart. I've heard this is a tougher compliance match for tonearms compared to the Cadenza. I don't have the flexibility of listening to either cartridges, so wondering what the sonic differences I'd hear between these two mono carts. If I went with the Miyajima, I could still get the ortofon SUT for my stereo Cadenza. Also, if there is a better SUT out there around $1000, feel free to let me know. My first inclination is the Ortofon since I'll always have one Ortofon low output cartridge, so it seems it would be a better specification match.

Choose the SUT with care if 1.) you want to match the impedance of the mono cart to the SUT input and 2.) you want to match the overall gain out of the phonostage of the mono and stereo carts.

That's why it seems to match the SUT with low output cart - the internal impedance matches well between the Ortofon Verto and Cadenza cartridges. I do think I always have an Ortofon cart, so that was my logic with the Verto.
