  • Turntable gurus! Is this assumption correct?

The concern: I think the suspension on my cartridge is compromised.

    Symptoms:

    1) Images to the right by several db
    2) measuring VTF placing it (via hand) onto scale results in a variance of .5 to a full gram depending on how gently I lower it.
    3) Doesn't track all that great - can skip forward easily
    4) Looking at side profile, the cartridge rides very low to the LP (about a credit card's worth of space).

Regarding #1, if I understand correctly, one channel's worth of information comes from the stylus' ability to move up and down. I'm guessing that if a cartridge's suspension isn't in good condition (e.g. it doesn't spring back fast enough) then one channel of info is very inaccurate.

    Thoughts?

Not that it's relevant, the cartridge is a Zyx Universe Premium.

    Thanks...

Not directly, no, but I'm guessing it will have to go back to him for repair.

I have an A-95 showing up today that I will use in the meantime.

Have you tried playing a mono record? I'm curious if the image is in the center? If it isn't, it's possible your anti skate is off or your azimuth or both could be skewed. Otherwise sounds like something is wrong with the cartridge or your preamp.

Very similar description to my AT PC1. It had a bent cantilever. I need to get it retipped.

LMK what you think of the A95, Ian. I love mine.

Do you think there's a defect, or is this a high-mileage cartridge? Out of curiosity, how many hours approximately are on the cartridge?

                  1) Images to the right by several db
How do you set anti-skate on The Black Beauty? Or could have azimuth been nudged? IIRC, you set VTF and azimuth with the same counterweight?

Did you also try swapping left for right channel ICs and did the issue change?

                  2) measuring VTF placing it (via hand) onto scale results in a variance of .5 to a full gram depending on how gently I lower it.
Could the batteries be going in the scale? I find as the batteries get low, the accuracy goes to the dogs. That said, if the batteries are bad and then you recheck, could the counterweight have been accidentally nudged? Also VTF will vary in some arms that don't have neutral balance; meaning if you adjust VTA/SRA, the VTF could have been off.

                  3) Doesn't track all that great - can skip forward easily
Does the arm feel like it's moving freely. Could there be some interference from the cuing mechanism?

                  4) Looking at side profile, the cartridge rides very low to the LP (about a credit card's worth of space).
As someone asked, how many hours do you have on the cartridge (though suspensions can collapse at any time )? Was it a low rider to being with? Some are and some aren't.

That said, if it's under warranty and you have a spare cartridge, send it back to get checked out for peace of mind.

                    Thanks for all the replies.

There is no anti-skate on the Black Beauty. I do set azimuth and VTF with the same counterweight.

Scale is fine because it reports weight consistently when I test it with a small metal object.

As for hours, very hard to know but I've only had it for less than a year.

Allen: the fact that you love your A95 factored into my decision to get that cartridge (Dre's review of course also helped as did some comments from Myles).

The A95 didn't show up yesterday but once it does I'll be sending my Zyx out to be looked at.
