Been on a mission! And a fascinating look back for me at where we are now in the world of cartridges. Far more neutral, in a different league when it comes to tracing than years ago, less technicolored (unless you like your music that way), and resolving without being etched, bright, tipped up or illuminated.

The Koetsu was probably the one cartridge that surprised me the most. Not at all like what I had remembered Koetsus sounding like. And the second biggest was the one you heard at my place: the Charisma. That cartridge, faults and all, would't embarrass even the best system. Just musically honest and fun to listen to.

A question on the Allnic Puritas:

Read (somewhere?) a vague reference to mounting issues? Any set-up comments or advice for this cartridge?
Would put it on a 4Point. TIA

            Hi Tim! Welcome aboard!

I had the Puritas ages ago mounted in the VPI 10.5 arm. Don't seem to remember any mounting issues (at least compared to a 47 Labs Miyabi ). But it was a while ago. I just remember the Puritas being very low compliance but would think the Kuzma is fine. I ran it into the Allnic phono so also had plenty of gain. Don't remember though what I set the loading at. Sorry couldn't be more help.

I am trying to find out some feedback on the Ortofon Cadenza Red, but there are not many reviews and feedback out on it. Any previous Cadenza Red owners or any having experience hearing this cartridge? thanks again!

Myles refers, in his review, to the Koetsu Azule Platinum. I was under the impression, perhaps mistaken, that all stone bodied Koetsu cartridges used platinum magnets from the start. Is there in fact non-platinum Koetsu Azule cartridges? If so, when were the platinum magnets introduced? Thanks for your help!

I am far from a Koetsu expert but AFAIK all Stone bodies cartridges use the Platinum magnets.

What is a platinum magnet? Neodymium?

Can't speak about the Koetsu cartridges, but I had a Lyra Parnassus once and loved it. The Parnassus had a platinum/iron magnet with high percentage of platinum. I always thought the magnet gave the cartridge a very low grain structure with a very organic sound quality. I keep kicking myself for ever selling it... Following is a comment from Jonathan Carr on the Audiogon forum on April 22, 2010 regarding the Lyra Parnassus and Olympos:

"I agree that the choice of magnetic system has a noticeable effect on the sonic personality of a transducer, and to my ears, the Platiron magnet sounds more or less like a super-alnico. If you like the sound of alnico magnets, chances are that you will adore the sound of Platiron magnets (and chemically purified iron polepieces).

However, the magnet is only one small part of a transducer's design. To focus on that point, with the exception of the Olympos, the current Lyra cartridges all use the same magnetic system (although the material of the core is a little different on the Dorian and Delos as opposed to the Argo, Helikon, Skala and Titan. So these cartridges all sound like close siblings to each other, right? I don't believe that I have met too many listeners who claimed this (hardly any?), and to my ears and in my audio systems they certainly don't sound similar."

I think it is a mixture of platinum and cobalt. This mix results in a very strong permanent magnet.
