Would you trust the purchase of a higher end cart that has had a cartridge re-tip from Soundsmith? Any experiences?

a phono cartridge is not something I would want to buy second hand, no matter how cheap the deal.

sometimes on retips they replace the entire cantilever, in that case, youre getting a Frankencart.

I have what you'd call a "Frankencart" its a Koetsu Rosewood with a complete rebuild from Andy at Needle Clinc (new cantilever/stylus) it sounds better than I recall it ever did, even when new.

No doubt the results of a Frankencart can exceed the original design, but I believe they can also fall short of the original too.

Possibly in some cases but not Peter/Soundsmith The man is a genius. And I am not saying that glibly.

Now will ill it sound like the original is another story?

I think Trust is asking though will the cartridge stand the test of time. I think that Soundsmith stands by their work and owners should experience normal cartridge life expectancy and trouble free operation.

Thanks. I think if the cart were a total rebuild I would be less hesitant. This was just a re-tip, which I imagine is more complicated. The seller offers a 7 day return policy. Enough time to get it under a microscope and play test.

If its only the tip, and the suspension is good, and the work was done by Soundsmith. Yes.

This is the cart in question, says 250 hours. Thoughts?
Dynavector DRT XV-1T for sale. The top of the Dynavector product line. Everything you would expect and more. Dynamics, tonal integrity and tracking. Cartridge has under 250 hours of use and a new stylus installed by the experts ...

I wouldn't take the chance on this cartridge. Are you locked in a Dynavector?

I would like to try Dynavector or Koetsu. I know they are different, just trying to expand my cartridge experiences. Currently have a Lyra Skala, and have had an Ortofon. I do have a Dynavector 20XH coming in to give a try.

I used to keep alot of cartridges around. I've owned some of both. XV-1s, XXI MKII, 17D3, Karat from Dynavector. The RSP and Black from Koetsu. I've also had the Delos and Kleos here. A lot of these were here at the same time, or close to it. Others too. If you have any questions about the differences I heard between any of them you can message me and I will help all I can.

PASS! Besides its way too expensive for a 3rd party re-tipped cartridge.

What would be an appropriate price, not trying to low ball the guy.

It's basically worth less than or about the price of the re-tip, I wouldn't pay more than $300-$400 max for it. Very different story if it was refurbished by the factory, in that case you're basically getting a new cartridge. You have no idea what you're buying here, and you'll have the same problem if you had to sell it again.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ended up finding a slightly used Benz LP-S, based off recommendations from this forum. Will be interesting to compare to my Lyra Skala when it comes back from a rebuild.
