  • Ortofon MC A95 Review

Amazingly the MC A95 moving coil is the very first Ortofon transducer—particularly given the company's long tenure in the cartridge field—that I've ever reviewed. Now part of that oversight was availability. Part of that oversight was having a phono stage capable of amplifying very low output moving coil cartridges without the addition of noise or... what is the theory or reasoning for the unusual cartridge body shape? just to reduce mass?

nevermind. I see in the brochure that the shape is for resonance elimination.

Nice job, Myles. Your review presented its reader the kind of information a potential purchaser wants to know.

Do you have any info on the lifespan of the A95?

For some reason I have this notion in my head that the Ana was not particularly long lived, or maybe that was a rumor I read somewhere.

I think the comments from Ortofon about stylus longevity have served more to confuse rather than clarify the issue. From what I understand--and this pertains to many if not all cartridges (?)--the stylus has a 1000 hr lifespan where the stylus shows no wear. But the cartridge's has a lifespan of at least 2000 hours, if not more. What happens is the diamond profile begins to show some wear with time; however, this is more of a loss nee rounding of the stylus' facet shape eg. footprint and doesn't damage the record. Just that the cartridge may lose a little of its sound and refinement. Not like say a chipped or damaged stylus.
