What are your initial thoughts on its sound?Marty -
Nothing really until dialed and broken in.
You know the "normal" course of MC break-in:
New out of the box; Good sound but limited frequency extremes, dynamics and resolution. I will generally start with the arm level and mildly adjust for SRA.
10-30 hrs: Sounds horrible, sometimes very non-linear, sometime encountering mistracking for a period, sometimes bright as the generator mechanism begins to loosens up.
30-50 hrs: Cartridge starts to settle down, especially in upper octaves, frequency extremes extend.
50-75 hrs: Dynamics are usually the last thing to come in. It's at this point that start to fine tune VTF, SRA and azimuth as well as double checking my set-up especially on the more difficult to set up cartridges. Nudies such as the Atlas and A95 are so much easier to align. The hardest cartridge I ever set up is hands down the Miyabi 47 Labs. No threaded cartridge screws. Arghhhh.... The Charisma isn't the easiest since it has a short cantilever and big body.
Break-in varies among cartridges; the Charisma's recommended break in time is 50 hrs. I think the A95 and Proteus maybe even the ZYX was closer to 100 hrs for the cartridges to fully strut their stuff.
But I will say the newest Charisma reminds me a lot of its little brother that I reviewed a while back.Myles B. Astor, PhD, Administrator
