  • What Phono Cables are You Using With Your Tonearm?

That is if you don't have a captive cable.

I've a couple around that have used with great success ranging from the $1200 Audience (that I reviewed for PF a while back), the Bill Low Signature, Lyra's Phonopipe and the differentially balanced Tranparent Gen 5 phono cables.

The Audience is a great value for the money, erring primarily in omission and being just a touch soft. The Bill Low Signature, a silver based cable, excels in the low end, transparency and especially dynamics. Lyra's Phonopipe is very resolving and clean sounding but I haven't had enough time to fully appreciate all its qualities yet. My go to right now is the Tranparent that is a big step up from the 7 or year old earlier version. Much more resolution and transparency but it still has that amazing soundstage and three dimensionality that brings performers and instruments to life.

re Lyra's Phono pipe, Jonathan went on a quest to develop the lowest capacitance wire he could make, I've been keen on trying some myself. My last few 'arms (spiral groove and now Tri-planar) have captive cables that are a single run from cartridge clips to RCAs/XLRs, the wire used is proprietary and not easily changed.

Given my system I can't see me spending a G-note or more for phono cables, unless a used pair came up for half that price. I ordered some Morrow Audio PH5 phono cables that should arrive in a few weeks. Looking forward to hearing some improvements.

Yes the Phonopipe is very low capacitance. The cable is handmade and takes a while to make. Very flexible too. I intend to give it a listen with the Atlas too.

Last time I had an arm with a detachable cable (SME V) I used Max Kreifeldt's "Silver Breeze" - a truly fine value. For reviewing phono stages, I had two, one terminating in XLR, one in RCA.

Today the Kuzma 4Point uses Crystal Cable.

Funny thing is at the Capital Audiofest, VPI was using the Nordost phono on the Titan table and it just wasn't sounding right. Bass was missing and music was just boring. Inserted the VPI phono for Nordost phono and was much better. This isn't meant as a condemnation please or a plug for the VPI (and remember VPI now uses some new Nordost wire inside their tonearms!). There was just some sort of weird interaction going on. In fact, it was the US KEF distributor who made the sway. He was listening to the DCD ITL that I had brought and then switched. I went over to him after and said that sounded more like what I hear at home. He nodded and said he knew that album like the back of his hand and it just didn't sound right. File that under anything can and will happen at shows.

I like the standard SME phono wires that come with their arms specially the vintage ones that people tend to throw away, very natural sounding which matches my favorite 3012-R perfectly.

Ikeda HBC-MS-5000 on my SME V. The VDH stock cable is not worth it. After several trials, I settled for the Ikeda cable.

Interesting. First time heard of that combination!

Due to changing Tonearm (Again :-) I am having to sell my MIT Magnum m1 Phono cable (see buy and sell forum on this Site). I was very nervous as to what to replace it with as its the best Tonearm cable I have ever had. Finally settled for the Synergistic research Tricon 20th anniversary. It was a bit of a gamble due to the price difference ( 3.3K for the MIT and 1K for the SR) The fact that the construction is so different did not help either. But I have to say it worked out quite well. The only thing missing is backgrounds are not quite as black and a tiny bit of soundstage depth (could be the tonearm) but imaging and Timbre is very fine indeed so I am happy with this combo.

Odin 2 which is the best that I have auditioned in my system and an audible improvement over the earlier Odin which I also owned.
