  • Vestax PDX-3000 arm geometry question

Recently saw someone using this turntable not for DJing but for playing records for enjoyment. But isn’t this arm geometry such that it will be horribly wrong except in the middle of the record?

I guess the idea is that it trades tracking angle accuracy for eliminating anti-skating. I wonder how it sounds.

I’ve seen turntables with straight tonearms, and heard they’re better for scratching than S-shaped arms. Is this true?

There has been lots of debate online as to which is best as far as scratching, record wear and so on over the years. Some people also rightly point out that there are J (one bend) and S (two-bend) arms. Truth is, for all practical purposes, you’ll be fine with either, although the bent arms are far more common.

Crazily they trumpet that you can adjust arm height but the geometry is wacky.

S to the extreme? Kinda the exact opposite of the straight arm.

Seems a lot of straight, S and J shaped arms are used. More interest in isolation than apparently about the tonearm.

I would think so unless it’s 14-inches or so.

That same company Vestax/Guber does some other questionable things.

The one posted in this thread could have a conical stylus and some odd anti-skating/sliding setup.

However, an even odder item from back in 2009 caught my eye.

                Link:
                http://www.martinloganowners.com/for...-on-wrong-side

Not even the online seller could explain it.

Having seen many 3 and 4 tonearm setups in the past ten years online maybe I have a better idea. However, none of those setups require a jumping over the spindle to set tonearm back to resting position.

                Still a mystery.
