Tom told the story in the NYT last year about his first experiences in college, when he was enrolled in a local community college where I was teaching. He said he enrolled in the introduction to astronomy course that I taught and lasted only one day! He was scared away by all the math. My colleague and I were the only ones teaching astronomy at that time, so one of us had Tom Hanks as a student, but didn't know it. I never kept the first day enrollment printouts, only the ones that came after a week or so when the dropouts and adds to the classes were stabilized. So I'll never know for sure whether I had a gangly 19 y.o. kid in my class who now collects old typewriters and has a nice TT.

We were definitely using typewriters (or pencils and pens) in those days - 40+ years ago.
