  • What Labels Are Doing The Best New Digital Recordings?

Years ago it was Telarc and a few others.

How about today? Classical? Jazz? Rock?

Let’s limit it to two channel here.

Late to the convo but - rude and off topic. If you don't care about digital go elsewhere...

I'm not a big non-classical fan, but here are a few digital albums that I really like. All relatively early in the digital era.

Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat (original Latent label vinyl and Cisco reissue)
Paul Simon Graceland (partly digital) (safety master)
Cowboy Junkies Trinity Sessions (safety master)
Dire Straits Brothers in Arms (just heard that last night and this morning for the first time - master tape dub)

Winston Ma's CD's on his FIM label (both classical and pop/rock/jazz)

For current classical Channel Classics (both multichannel and stereo) I play downloads of both (usually DSD64)

Bob Witrak's High Definition Tape Transfers (hirez digital transfers of analogue tapes - classical and jazz) done at DXD352/24 and DSD256, usually copying 15ips 2 track tapes - Currently taking advantage of his 20 or 30% off President's week sale!

This isn’t a “label” exactly - but the Steven Wilson remasters of classic Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, XTC, and a few others I’m sure I’m forgetting are absolutely STELLAR.
          TAPE: Studer A807, A810; Revox B77 MkII; Tascam BR-20; Technics RS-1700; Pioneer RT-707, RT-909
          VINYL: Pioneer PL-50LII/Benz LP-S MR/ModWright PH 9.0; Denon DP59-L/Dynavector 20xH
DIGITAL: Bryston SP-3, Marantz NA6006/Pioneer N-50, Schiit Bifrost
          SPEAKERS: B&W Nautilus 800, Pioneer DSS-9, Velodyne FSR-15
          AMPS: Cary SLP-05/Sunfire Signature 600, Pioneer SX-1980

In addition to Channel Classics, Chandos and Hyperion are both making excellent recordings. I know most of Chandos recent recordings are multi-channel 128f DSD, but I don't of that format being available commercially, unfortunately. They sell SACD's and 24/96 stereo downloads only, AFAICT.

The only jazz label that seems to be making good recordings is the old standby ECM. Every now and then there will be something good sounding on another label, but I have not discerned a pattern (artist, engineer, etc.) if there is one

The 2xHD label typically records from tape to DSD 256.

Isn't Myles asking about the best new digital recordings? (as in the original recording was digital).

Ok I have just two as asked. But there are many.
One is obvious analog productions. Chad does the best he can on conversions. I buy from him mostly what I own and love. And now getting his analog.
next is ruff as I love two labels but one is a bit above the third. SHM I own many of there's bought mostly on sacd
                    and ripped to DSF.
                    third is Kent moon.
but not to complicate Myles question but format matters.
Red book can be very good. But 24/96 or 24/192 is much closer to analog. Dsd is also closer.
If you just play digital red book done well its great and some may feel it's best. But if you have analog in vinyl or tape hi Rez becomes my pref now.
if I return just to digital and just play it for a day or so red book becomes fine and being the bulk of what I own.
please don't take my post for all to agree this is just my new observation as I have jumped into analog with both feet and a deep sea diving suit.
                    analog stuff.
