  • Digital Source Material

Do you favor recordings made from analog or digital masters? All things being equal, is there a sonic difference between the two sources?

It seems that the only true native DSD is music that is either minimally edited or taken from reel-to-reel tapes while PCM doesn't suffer from that issue.

While I like LP's made from analog masters better, I don't mind if the master is hi-res digital. But I do have a problem with "labels" such as Reference Recordings that use digital masters although they have analog as well. They say, analog masters are too fragile to use... When if not now is the ideal time to use analogue masters? They loose in quality over time, so what the f...?

I prefer an all analog chain because there seems to be less processing, normalizing. compression and other misguided BS going on which ultimately compromises the sound. Even going to a digital copy from an analog master to often shows it has been "remastered" for digital, usually to the detriment of the recording.

This is made obvious when running up the volume past background levels, the harshness and stridency makes it unlistenable. It is a shame because what might be an otherwise decent performance regardless of genre ends up on the don't bother pile.

I own recordings with digital births and analog births and while I might say those with an analg start in life might be best most of the time I have some all DDD which are very good. The secret seems to be locked up in how the recording was made and not in the domain.

For me I like great analog made into dsd not hinrez PCM. Now pure dsd as it was recorded has its praise but to me old analog just has something about it that makes it easy on the brain.

I heard some of Peter McGrath's newest DSD recording today and was very impressed. I didn't ask whether it was 1, 2 or 4X DSD though but wouldn't be shocked if it was double or quad DSD.

I have music in the tree dsd formats some music downloaded from them in all three formats. As I can here dsd 128 over 64 and it's better the question becomes not only what is better but how good the analog was to begin with . Now dsd 256 on headphones I cannot tell one from the other but now that my IRS v are back up I will try this same testing over the weekend and post back. I know to some analog people dsd 256 is the hopeful of finally having the analog tale quality Ina digital package , ill listen and post but I am no analog sound authority . But I do know what I like and perceive to be better
              analog stuff.

Hmm, is Peter planning to release some of his new DSD recordings? Sounds like something that Jared Sacks over at Native DSD.Com would love to help him host and sell!

It's an interesting question. I only hear his recordings at Audio Shows. Haven't seen them for sale.

You might want to check the new Raizes album by Breno Viricimo and Friends on the Just Listen label.
Recorded live, mixed through an Custom Analog Console and recorded to Stereo and Multichannel DSD 256 with no post production.

Some very mellow instrumental and soft vocals in 11 tracks of Brazilian and Samba music.

Raizes brings us the soft, lyrical music of Latin America with a Bossa Nova flavor featuring Breno Viricimo, Daniel de Moraes, Wiboud Burkes, Marijn van […]
