  • Wavpack offers lossless compression of DSD!

Although it apparently happened in December, I hadn't noticed it mentioned in my usual places. The compression is typically about 50-60%.

but apparently its a dual file format, one file is compressed, and one file is correction for lossless. how do you manage that?

I just recently saw this thread (Google) and registered to clarify a little.

The hybrid “dual-file” mode of WavPack only applies to PCM and is always optional. Normally, WavPack is pure single-file lossless, just like FLAC.

For DSD audio (either DSF or DFF), WavPack is always lossless.

Currently the biggest issue is with playback support, although Foobar2000, Jriver MC, MPD (Music Player Deamon) and Daphile have added support for WavPack DSD playback (and perhaps some I don't know about).

Let me know if I can answer anything else about this, and thanks for allowing me to reply!

Great news in some ways. When I get back I'll try it and compare I assume there is no loss in sound quality
while I would never lossless save my masters if it plays great why not for loaded server music
I keep about 2TB LOADED in my ref server and have about 12 total stored
have you done any sound comparisons ?

In reading it great concept having both files like that too
great idea. For me I keep my stuff on 4TB drives Ina draw and raid arrays for access
            this does seem great.

Since it's mathematically lossless, there should not be any difference in sound, and if there is then I would not have much control over it. There are actually two modes of DSD compression available, but neither use as much CPU power as DST for decoding, and the default mode uses far less (but doesn't compress as much, obviously).

I would be interested in your impressions.

Another approach to save space with DSF files is to compress them with ZIP.
Some DSD Download sites, like Blue Coast Music and NativeDSD Music already use ZIP for that purpose.

I did nkt know that , but I could swear I have some zip or something with some downloads
perhaps it's not zip but a way to allow only one opening

Thanks! I've certainly enjoyed looking around the forums so far. I work with digital a lot, but actually own quite a few pieces of vintage tube gear.

You're right that general-purpose compression algorithms hardly work at all on PCM audio data, however they actually do work fairly well on DSD. Using regular WinZip on DSD audio gives about 30% compression, and bzip2 compression does even better at about 40%.

However, the zip files that I have bought from Blue Coast Music were created with the “no compression” option, so there was no space savings. In that case, the zip container is just being used for the CRC verification, which none of the DSD formats provide (except WavPack, of course). Since you have to go out of your way to turn off the compression like that, I'm afraid to even speculate as to why.
