  • EAR Acute III CD Player review on current Stereophile

Did any of you read Acute III CE player review on Stereophile?

Times have changed in recent years for audiophiles in making their purchase decision solely based on printed magazine reviews as it was for me in years past. However, such a downer review of the EAR Acute III CD player in the current Stereophile magazine makes me wonder.. how EAR would let it be published ?

Tim has such a negative view of reviews on audio gear in general and expressed they were all as less than fair and ultimately money/favor driven in his past Facebook postings. He must be furious to say the least.

In the feedback section, the reviewer and the mfgr agreed the unit was defective and decided to send in a second unit for re-review.

No I didn't Ki. Will have to take a look. I assume it also contained measurements? Did they show anything?

If the unit was so dreadful sounding, I would have called up the distributor/EAR and explored the possibility of the unit being defective before printing the review. So I'm at a loss to understand the comments that JC referred to. Or am I missing something?

The measurements confirmed what was heard. I'm surprised they published.

I agree with Randy, I'm surprised that Stereophile published the review as the unit appears to have a defective output unit. All Art Dudly and John A ( who saw the possible error in his measurements and later it was confirmed by E.A.R. ) had to do is pick up the phone and tell EAR that something is a miss with the unit received and request another unit and hold the review for later. Talk about letting the ball drop. I can't wait for the second review to see what Stereophile writes. .

I guess Stereophile was in desperate need of a negative review in order to show that they are "objective". I don't think it worked.

Just saw they put an update on the EAR. It certainly was a defective unit that was reviewed and published. The new unit now has a "what a great performer... quite a bargain at is price... thoroughly recommended." Unfortunately, many may only read the the old bad review and decide not to look in to the EAR Acute Classic. Can't believe they published it. With that said, I just received my EAR Acute Classic today from my dealer Talked with my dealer about the bad review, and assured me of the greatness of the EAR CD/DAC. Will start to the burn in process soon. I had the older EAR Acute III and loved it as well

The EAR CDPs have always been among my favorites. Nice meaty sound while being able to do space and detail very well too. I would be very surprised if a functioning unit got a bad review. Their players really don't do anything wrong.
