  • Joing the ranks of Triple Threats Once Again

Doesn't happen often but know we have a few members here who ingest their music courtesy of digital, reel-to-reel and records. Well my digital playback is finally back up and I'm once again a member of that exclusive club! Sunny from Scaena (yes the speaker company) here installing the latest version of Scaena's Mainframe Music Server. Interesting product, 1 Terabyte SSD, some interesting concepts and to boot, runs off a battery power supply (5-8 hours charge). Right now using the old iFi DSD DAC but it won't play Quad-DSD despite what iFi claims. And I have some quad-DSD files (God are they large, no huge!) made from 15 ips tape that want to compare to the original tape! There are two DACs, however, that I have in mind to mate to the Scaena server.

BTW, anyone have the Leonard Cohen Live in London recording? Sounded wonderful last night through the system!

It depends on the firmware that you are using with the iFi DSD DAC.

You will need version 4.x or above to play DSD 256 files in Stereo with their portable DACs. DSD 256 Works fine here with iFi's version 5.x firmware.
Both the iFi iDSD Nano and the iDSD Micro play DSD 256 Stereo files all the time in my home office.

Thanks Brian! I will check the version and maybe that will cure the issue. But the importer supplied the DAC a year or so ago, maybe a bit more, and told Sunny it would playback quad DSD. So far no go but the server of course works with other DACs to playback quad DSD.

      And welcome to the board!

Brian for those who haven't met him, also writes for PF especially on the subject of digital and DSD. He's a great resource for anyone thinking of trying DSD, etc.

Eventually. Once the Kondo gear leaves.

Speaking of converting Tapes and LPs to DSD, you might want to give this post on the Native DSD Blog a look.

Thanks Brian, very cool article. I think David converted the tapes/files he sent to me with the Horus?

This would make an interesting thread as I know Larry Toy has been doing a massive project digitizing his albums. 15K of them IIRC.

I know David had a HAPI that he was using to convert Analog Tapes to DSD 256.

But that HAPI was loaned to Bob Attiyeh at Yarlung (for the first 20 of Bob's DSD 256 releases) and then to Cookie Marenco at Blue Coast (for her DSD 256 releases).

Not sure what David is using now for his tape to DSD 256 conversions.
                Could be a Horus.
