If it's for red book CD playback I'd go for a used Meitner Bidat. It was one of the best sounding when introduced and still gives the best of today a good run for the money. Make sure that's in original stock condition, many were modded by John Wright and some others, those suck.

Myles,
How about a bit of context? What is the intended system/listening environment? What's your definition of "inexpensive" these days?

General requirements please. RB only? Hi-rez capable? DSD capable? Budget?
Is this for you, Myles? I've been looking for same given Sonos and an inexpensive Denon SACD player are my only digital sources right now. Exogal and PS are on my shortlist, and leaning towards the PSA.Kronos Sparta -> Trinity Phono -> Trinity Pre -> CH Precision A1 -> Magico S7s

No, but thought it would be a good discussion topic! In large part because there's been some real breakthroughs in the price/performance ratio in the under $1000 price point for digital playback. The iFi DSD DAC for instance sticks out in my mind and was wondering what other members experiences have been.

If you are looking for versatility, the iFi iDAC2, if you want mostly a DAC for CD based files, then the Schiit Multibit Bifrost.
If hooking up to a PC or notebook, then include a Schiit Wyrd or iFi iUSB.
All the low cost Centrances are nice too.Steve Lefkowicz

The ifi dsd micro does good dsd but it's pcm is pretty is nice but a bit warm for me. I sold mine. But keep in mind it's dsd was chip less and without having a server or some kind of great source no dac really performs as it can.
I think the biggest issue in digital music playback is the source . I own a hdvd800 it's by sennhiser it's a great amp for the hd800 phones but it's dac is a bit thin
And it sounds pretty bad if not from a server or some kind usb converter like an off ramp or ap1/pp. if I use one of them the dac is far better still a bit thin but nice to use.
So for be when someone says this dac is this but has no real server or other kind of purified source I scaratch my bald headLast edited by Alrainbow; 04-15-2016, 03:45 PM.analog stuff.
