  • DSD Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs): Can You Hear A Difference?

There is a lot of discussion around about which Analog to Digital Converter (ADCs) sounds the best.

There are some Free Demo files on the web comparing the sound of different DSD ADCs.
You can download these and see which sound the best to you.

DSD Battle Royale ! - Modified Korg, Modified EMM Labs, Ayre, Mytek, Merging Horus, Grimm AD-1, Tascam
With the newfound push for more DSD downloads, the consumer is demanding more and more of their systems. Tape is still the all mighty king with high-end vinyl rigs right behind. So where does that leave digital? For years audiophiles have been less enamored with digital and slowly building up...

I tried an MSB Platinum w/ Diamond PS at one time and it did excel at PCM recordings.

Bruce so gals to see you post. Hope your getting better.
It makes sense as it's pcm at the time was very good
I have not heard the new select yet but I am willing to bet it's pcm is its strong point. I thought I read some where that a cat Stevens's album from acoustic sounds was done from tape to dsd with one ?

I noticed that MSB is strictly playing PCM files at their audio show demos these days.
Apparently they too have concluded the sweet spot of their DACs is with PCM files...

lol I agree but it's very disappointing at there price point dsd being the format close to analog is not there strong point.
Do you still own a lampi ?

I have a fundamental problem with comparing samples from ADC's found on the net. It is no different to auditioning different speakers in different setups and trying to make out what is doing what. The chain and source material in-front of the ADC is the real deciding factor. The ADC is only the window. I get the best results passing everything through my slightly optimized CJ Premier 16 preamp's main circuits feeding these directly into my Apogee ADC. Call it a superior valve buffer? I think it's similar in effect to the big valve power amplifiers that drove the cutting lathes' heads in the glory days of vinyl.

It does seem playback is more important then converting
I agree what's before the conversion matters much more.
Playback can make or break any recording weather it's pcm or dsd as well. There are two MSB select dealers I know of in nyc I do plan to put some good stuff On a thumb drive and listen but a conclusion will not happen unless it's bad. How good is complex when it's on a whole new setup and one dealer I know is horrible on there setups even though it's equipment is top notch
I think most who buy top shelf stuff just want it and buy it.

Anyone is welcome to stop and hear the MSB Select DacII on both PCM and DSD. I don't think after actually listening you would say that PCM is the strong point. PCM sounds very good, but so does DSD, ESPECIALLY native DSD. Don't trust me (I'm a dealer), come and hear for yourself.

I would suggest anyone in the NY area take Bob on his offer. I'm going to talk more about the MSB Select II in my Magico M3 thread but let me say this. It does some things, using 2X DSD that you didn't think digital could do.
