  • PS Audio DirectStream Junior DAC Review

I recently completed my review of the PS Audio DSJ DAC. It converts all PCM files to DSD 10x and upsamples DSD files to DSD 10x as well. This is the first DAC that made my Beatles 24 bit files sound good and of course it shines with native DSD files.

The PS Audio DirectStream Junior DAC is another member of the class of audio components that exudes pride of ownership from the time it lands on your doorstep. No flimsy cardboard boxes here folks. The DSJ comes double boxed with the outer box in plain cardboard to fool nosy audiophile neighbors with a predilection for... Read More ยป

I wonder how this Jr compares to Sr in sound. It looks like a winner.

I like this comment in your review Mark "" something I could listen to vice gnashing my teeth.".

More money was spent on the circuits and layout of the Sr so I expect there are meaningful differences to be heard. I think the Jr represents the closest PS Audio could come to the Sr given the price point they were working with. As Dave Clark mentioned above, the Jr is "solid." Very solid I might add. You can't help but be impressed as you unpack the Jr and hold it in your hands and look at the quality of construction and feel the weight of it.

great read and review Mep. I own all you played and the little green apple too. The one word I feel you left out for PCM is bite but your explanation of bad sounds from PCM is spot on. What other reviews have you done. I love your comment of the mytek honesty abounds in your review very cool.

You did a level 4. I had a few of those. And a 5 too. now a 7 that's a great goloden gate Ina 7 box , also a golden gate head dac Ina plain box too. I helped him voice the head dac for him. His stuff is very good . I own a box set of Stevie Ray Von from acoustic sounds a very nicely packaged set . It's clean and clear while I know it's masted as his stuff is always very good it must be from a PCM multi track or master . Anyway the point is I love the guys music but as I say PCM has bite this stuff is a great white shark get my point. No matter what dac I used could Not enjoy this stuff at any Louder volume . I like to play loud so quality and the kind of quality is paramount . The new revamped big 7 with new kron tubes allowed me to blow my ears off lol. So loud without gritting my teeth that I could hear the studio hum direing a quitter passage. It calmed the beast. I owned a ds dac for while nice stuff very well made and with firmware rolling it's a great dac .

Stevie Rays stuff sounds really nice on vinyl, I could never get a good feeling about his music using hi-rez either through my Mytek 192 DSD or my ExaSound e22. But drop a needle,he's right there.

I don't know most of you analog people but I do love the posts and honesty in them. I own a msb stack at the time a 40 k investment even it was not good Stevie on sacds. My lampi seems to tame it though. Instead of buying the set I shroud of bought the vinyls and had bud rip, them.
