  • Magnus audio, opinions?

Anyone have any time with the MA-280, MA-300, or MA-400 SS amps from Magnus audio? I read a lot of good things about the 300 amp. I also have read about a few reliability issues. They look and spec like they should be pretty nice. Were the quick upgrades from 280-300-400 more about sonics or early design problems? The prices look very nice. Was wondering how they might compare to Krell 302e or 402e, BAT VK-600se or 655se, or some others in the $10k new range? Thanks

Youre considering spending $10K on an amp with possible reliability problems? You must have either a lot of money or guts...

I have neither a lot of guts or money. That's why the thread. Was thinking about buying used, although the new ma-400 is around $7.5K new. The people who said they had the problems were with the earlier models (that I can find) .

They are the SS division of Canary Audio. I first heard about them a couple years ago on whatsbestforum. Reviews and opinions online have been positive as far as sonics go.

sorry no offence intended, but if it had some problems, even if fixed, their reputation and resale value even of the good ones will be hurt.

No offense taken. It may be a case of to good to be true amplifier. Looks really appealing at used price.

of the MA-400, the webpage doesn't say how it handles low frequencies, via a dc servo or just a series capacitor in the signal path (10 Hz?)

Usually, Mosfet amps are hard to blow up unless you do something really bad like short the output.

Canary Audio tube products seem to be very heavily discounted when they are new in the box.

Thanks everybody. To many unknowns for me. I'll stick with a BAT vk-655se, when I can swing it. Music direct and BAT support, along with the fact they are only a couple hours from my house....and plus in 15 years only one return on several items. (leaky cap on 9 year old phonostage), and most of all I love the sound and everything else in my system is based around BAT sonics.
