Been trying out the ampsandsound Mogwai amp for the past couple of weeks. Single ended running a single 6550 per side for about 4 watts max into an 8 ohm speaker. Sold mostly as a headphone amp, but with speaker binding posts too. Not compatible with a passive linestage (not enough gain through the speaker terminals) so I've been using a Burson Conductor Virtuoso instead of my DIY passive. This is is proving to be a really sweet amp with my Tektons. I'll be writing it up in Positive Feedback at some point in the future.

Yes, but I don't think it is that uncommon. My Antique sound Labs amp runs a KT88 single ended for 5 watts, though it offers a triode/pentode switch and puts out 15 watts in pentode mode (which I feel sounds better with my primary speakers). The Almarro A205A is a single ended EL84 amp that sounds wonderful with about 3 or 4 watts output.
Big benefit of these is cost. You don't have to spend crazy priced for exotic or vintage triode tubes. The last really nice pair of matched KT88s I bought were about $70/pair.Steve Lefkowicz
