It is an imposing piece of gear. I am waiting for some new speaker cables. The amp only accepts spades so I get to add to the collection.

Clean, work-like, very attractive to me. I've heard it for a short session with the Thiel 3.7 and Vandersteen Quatro speakers. (cloth) I remember liking it with both.

If you liked it with the Thiel 3.7 that says a lot. Such a revealing speaker...

This was years ago, I think at the time I still had my Thiel cs7.2's driven by Krell FPB 650m amplifiers, I had used for years. Maybe I was used to the Thiel top end.

Good to hear, Tom. It has been around for many years for a reason. Can't wait for the cables to get here and give it a try.

I thought it was redesigned 2-3 yrs ago?

No, it is basically unchanged from what I understand. Build quality is exceptional. High end parts and great measurements. If you have it right then keep making it.

Does it come with a phono card? It looks like only balanced operation? What is one to do with the phono input?

Only Boulder pre with phono is the model 1010. You want phono you buy a phono preamp. Boulder only provides balanced inputs.

It can be a pain sometimes. My BAT phono has only balanced outputs and my BAT preamp has only balanced inputs and outputs. I have my tonearm cable on my SME terminated XLR, and use XLR junction box on my VPI table.

          • #10
That is the deal. Balanced only and no phono pre.

How many WPC? Looks like it has a pre-out to drive an external power amp in case its not enough.

The amp offers 150 watts into both 8 and 4 Ohms. 300 watts peak into 4 Ohms. You are correct that it can function as a Pre-amp and utilize and external amp. The pre-out's can be used for subwoofer's in Variable mode or for a record out function in fixed. It also has a home theater function to merge with a surround processor.

looks like the only thing missing is "main in" jacks so you can use it as a power amp with an external preamp.

That does not seem to be an option. You would need quite the pre-amp to relegate the 865 to amp only duties!
