I want to try a new set of power tubes in my Rogue ST100 power amp. This amp sounds too solid state for a tube amp. Recommend a power tube other than the stock KT120 than will give me more of a lush tube sound. I need four so please keep it reasonable in cost.

I don't think you are going to get anything lusher than the KT120s. I think that is the amp's sound.

Myles must be a bad amp design. Time to sell.

        Marty,

Since everyone has a different thought as to what too solid-state means, could you provide a bit more substance for better understanding of your perspective?

        Thanks,
        Dre

No that wasn't the intent. I think that Mark aims for a more neutral tube-sound. Every designer's product has a signature and IMHO that is Mark's. Perhaps you might think about something else in the chain to address this issue. Even room acoustics?

I was being serious Myles. I am stuck with it as resell on them is horrendous for some reason. My Rogue dealer gave me an unbelievable deal so no big financial loss.

I really am just curious what other power tubes sound like. The ST100 will bias many different variants. What else is a bored audiophile suppose to do with his free time?

In between albums I have time to switch tubes. Got me one of those pot holder gloves.

Will it take a KT150 Marty? What other variants? 6550 types?

As hot as the power transformer runs I am going to say no. I even asked Mark Obrien at the NY show and his face contorted when I said ST100 and KT150 in the same sentence. I could try with a fire extinguisher handy.

I am going to sweet talk my local ARC dealer to let me home evaluate a hot REF150SE demo they have. I am worried about my financial outcome.

If the 150 is anything like the REF 110 I just sold I don't think its going to be warmer or 'tubey' its a very neutral amp with more extended highs and a leaner mid-band than typ. tube amps. Its a hybrid and balanced input only.
