Have you ever had AR tube amps? Curious how they compare to the Pass. Very nice looking setup.

Yes, I had a pair of REF250 at home for a week . They were second hand and very reasonably priced . I was planning to buy them when I asked the dealer for home demo. I was fortunate at that time because I also had a pair of XA160.8 for home demo. Both brands are carried by the same person. By the end of the week I decided to go with Pass. First of all , Pass does not sound like a standart SS amp. Pass sound is much smoother compared to SS designs. You can say a tubelike sound with plenty of low frequency control. The highs are very smooth and the midrange is lifelike. Vocals are as someone is singing in the room. You also get most of it with REF250 and better at some points. ARC has very relax sound and you can listen for many hours. The only problem with ARC was low frequency control which is very comman with tube designs at high volume levels. I am living in a house and I can turn on the volume as much as I can. I also prefer listening symphonies at concert hall level, other than that I also enjoy 60's,70's rock music. I decided Pass is for me. If I have lived in an apartment or condo, I would definitely go for REF250.

I have been looking at getting a reference quality Solid State power amplifier for review purposes and to keep in check my views on Single Ended Triode amplifiers - So I am looking to get into a good SS amp. I also prefer to be able to have it drive a vast array of speakers. I live in Hong Kong and don't need ridiculous power as the flats are relatively small - so I have been looking at the X150.8 from Pass Labs and the Accuphase 4200 as both are around the same price.

There is a limit to how much I want to put to SS and I would prefer that it is friendly to high efficiency speakers as well as tough to drive speakers - high power amps can sometimes bully HE speakers.

Pass and Accuphase sort of top the list for me so far but still considering others like PS Audio - I figure around the $7k range 2 ohm stable is pretty good. Accuphase as I remember never sounded too solid State fakey fakey to me - but it's been awhile. And I liked First Watt - but those are different animals - and usually when I hear Pass Labs it's always on speakers I kind of hate so it's a bit tough to tell sometimes.
