  • A Look Back at an Audio Adage

HP once said if you want to enjoy digital, stop listening to analog. Perhaps he should have said, if you want to enjoy listening to your audio system, stop listening to live music.

The real thing in a great hall is the anti-Christ to audio isn't it Myles? 👹 Go to a Vienna Philharonic concert at Carnegie and listen to a Bruckner symphony and you won't be able to turn the system on for 48 hours.

What's amazing is how much easier it is to perceive the composer's intent and structure of the piece. It's the contrast between the orchestral sections that really stands out the most.

What would really be eye opening Myles would be if Bob could get you on the floor sitting next to the trumpet section when playing a big piece. I think you would be reduced to a puddle. Seymour Rosenfeld, long time second seat and one of my teachers, recounted the first time he played in the orchestra after signing a contract. The trumpets had an entrance and he put his horn up to play and the sound of the section was so overwhelming to him that nothing came out of his horn. That's after years of already playing in an orchestra.
