  • It ain't audiophile, but I love my kitchen mini-system!

I really enjoy listening to music when I'm cooking, but I don't have access to my system as it's downstairs. So instead I bring up a pile of CDs and play them through my JVC AM/FM/CD Mini system. I usually select music that is upbeat and ranges from Stevie Ray Vaughan, to Chaka Khan to Earth, Wind & Fire to The Rolling Stones and everything in between. The energy of the music gets my juices flowing and I find it helps make the more mundane tasks of cutting, slicing and general prep work needed for cooking to be a more pleasurable experience. I've even been known to try a dance step or two.

In a way, and don't shoot me for saying this, the music is sometimes even more pleasurable as I simply focus on the music without restraint. I'm not concerned about sound quality one iota...I simply enjoy hearing some great songs.

Time to head upstairs shortly with some music under my arms. I promised the family a Beef Stew and Apple Pie. (Will see if I can finally master the Moonwalk)

I totally get it. We had set up a background music system for the main floor, distributed among 3 rooms- nothing too exotic, but over time--it was CD based, I quit using it, gear obsoleted, and it is now no longer set up. Once we move, and establish a new beach-head, with kitchen 'done,' my plan is to have an easy to use system for music and video there. We spend far more time in our kitchen area than just about any other part of the house. We do have a fabulous stove in this house that is not going with us- and it is too "heavy metal" to do in Texas. It is an old Aga- about the size of a battleship. Man, does it make food taste good! I'm not much of a cook, my wife is innately talented, and can pull stuff together intuitively. Like the stereotype, I am very good on an outdoor grill, though.

Hi Bill - I believe you posted a pic of that battleship some time ago. Will it be long before you're completely settled in? In addition to having a great passion for music, cooking ranks right up there.

The only reason for my threadstart is to point out that while I'm an audiophile, I refuse to restrict myself to hearing great music on only audiophile systems.

What about one of those little audioengine systems? Sounds perfect!
