  • How many concerts do you attend monthly?

We attend concerts on a regular basis. Probably at least two per month, if not more on some months… I believe this is important to continue to train my listening abilities and for tuning my system. Of course, most of all I enjoy them.

How many concerts to you attend and why?
    Sincerely,

    Joe

I love early music! Years ago I was on the Board of Directors for Fred Renz’s Ensemble for Early Music based out of St. John the Divine in New York’s Upper West Side.

I used to go to concerts there Myles. I didn’t know you were an early music lover. I have increased my record stock and streams for the genre by quite a bit over the last 7 years.

But you get to hear your son playing! That counts for something!

We - like a couple of other city dwellers here - are lucky to be able to go out on any given night and find live music. Or even hear music in the subways while waiting for a train! 🤣

Heidi and I try to do at least one concert, sometimes two a month. For classical it’s Carnegie Hall and generally Smoke or The Blue Note for jazz. When we do that occasional rock concert it’s MSG.

Why we go is more multi-factorial. Sometimes it’s say to hear my music teacher or some other musicians I know like Jerome Sabbaugh (who is a member here), to play. Other times it’s to hear the orchestras, for instance, the Boston, Vienna or Philly Orchestras when they are in town playing. (Yeah the tickets for non-nosebleed seats aren’t cheap but worth their weight in gold pressed latinum.) Other times it’s to hear a favorite piece. Sometimes it’s a combo like the Philly doing Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique. (Or the time we went to hear Britten’s War Requiem at Tangelwood.) No audio system known to mankind can do either piece justice.

I should add I also get to hear live music during my two-one hour guitar music lessons a week. Nothing like that especially when get into ear training and play the notes I just played! 🤬 Well at least that tells me not tone deaf. 😎

Also not often enough. Tomorrow night a friend is taking us to see Bill Callahan here in Dallas. It'll be the first time we've gone to see music in months.

Before Covid, we attended between 50 and 70 concerts a year. All classical or opera. During our annual trip to London we often attended close to a concert a day for the three weeks we visited. We stopped attending during COVID and are currently starting to dip our toes back into concert attendance. We our daughter and her family moving close to us this past summer, we are starting to attend the grandkids piano recitals and school musical performances, but I don't count those as concerts.

Minneapolis has a very good live music scene. I go to 3 to 4 live shows per month. First Avenue dominates the live music venues. They own First Avenue, 7th Street Entry, Palace Theatre, Fine Line, Turf Club and do the bookings at the Fitzgerald Theater. Mostly rock and alternative at First Ave bookings. Dakota is a nice jazz club. State Theatre, Orpheum, Pantages and Ordway offer some nice options. Ryan Adams did a solo acoustic show recently at the State Theatre and played 34 songs. On the expand my horizons front, Orchestra Hall is an excellent venue. I have yet to visit in Orchestra Hall and the Minnesota Orchestra in 2023. When the snow finally melts(Probably June the year-ha-ha) plenty of outdoor shows. Still working and desperately short of free time. Something to look forward to when I eventually retire.

You live in a great area for hearing great music. Wish we did. We have one performing arts center. It’s excellent. We also have an outdoor venue in Panama City - app an hour away. We’re going there next month for the Seabreeze Jazz Festival. Lost of great Jazz, but the venue - it’s not the best and always very crowded. But the Jazz line up is pretty good. It’s four days long. And we are going on some mini-cruises (lunch and dinner) with some of the performers. One on one discussions with them is often entertaining. So it should be fun.
          Sincerely,

I go to about 2 per month. It’s not that evenly spaced out of course but last year I did go to 24 exactly! I’d like to go to more, but time / logistics prevent that.

I've slowed down considerably. I've ltd it to a handful of acoustic shows a year with some sound reinforcement via a discrete PA system (which means every classical concert you'll likely to see). I carry two sets or ear plugs just in case. I've got more years behind me than ahead of me, no need to take unnecessary risks.

I had custom Westone earplugs made about 10 years ago. Best $300 I ever spent. I used to take yellow foamies to concerts, but the customs are easier to use, much more comfortable, and do a much better job.

learned my lesson attending a KISS show on their reunion tour in '96. Our seats were terrace level hard left of the stage near the pyrotechnics. It only took one loud bang to set me on an aggravating journey to beat tinnitus. After a few specialist and a 2 years of uncertainty it went away on its own, but changed me forever. After that I always bring earplugs.

Well so far this thread dispels that myth that audiophiles are only into their equipment.

Yeah repeating something that isn’t true a million times still doesn’t make it true.

We have friends (a couple who are both physicists) who attended even more concerts than us, even before he retired. When he retired, he told his wife that he now had time for even more concerts. She does like concerts too, but not like him. I wouldn't be surprised if they attend 100 concerts a year. He especially loves opera and he knows so much more about opera than I will ever know. (BTW, he led one of the two teams that discovered the Higgs Boson).
