The vinyl boom has pushed the few remaining pressing plants well over capacity. The lines are backed up. Some are running 24/7/365. Delivery dates stretch on three months, six, a whole year. The indies, which ignited the explosion, have had their releases squeezed out for major catalogue items and unnecessary reissues. But where there's excessive demand, new supply follows. Precision Record Pressing Inc. in Burlington, Ontario — a massive new vinyl manufacturing plant — will begin production this August.
The new pressing plant occupies a 20,000 sq. ft. facility. Its presses and boilers and other machinery arrived from Europe just two weeks ago and are in the midst of setup. The operation is a partnership between one of Canada's largest music distributors, Isotope Music Inc., and Czech vinyl manufacturer GZ, which already fills orders for Universal, Sony Canada, and a handful of independents.
