  • Since When?

Does a magazine renewal notice come from a Collection Center? I took a two year sub, it's obviously running out and I haven't reupped. So they are putting my account in credit suspension since I haven't taken them up on that last chance, new two year, $24.97 subscription? Huh? What gives? Oh by the way, the last two year subscription was $12.97 and sure I can beat the fabulous $24.97 offer just by going to the mag's website. Or waiting for a better offer. I like playing brinkmanship.

It's not the magazine's fault since they subcontract subscriptions out to an outside vendor but I find this practice highly unscrupulous. Like taking out a new subscription and you immediately get a renewal notice. No I don't have Alzheimers and remember very clearly having taken out a two year subscription. Thus I'm not going to take out another.

My latest offer for renewal to TAS was $36 for one year, yet the magazine has inserts offering 1 yr for $14.99. What a ripoff.

Call them and complain. My auto subscription renewal to Car & Driver came in at twice the rate I could have re-subscribed for if not on auto-renewal. I called them and they extended it to two years. I think most magazines these days will do anything to make whatever money they can, but will also do whatever it takes to keep a subscriber.

I'd call and complain but conveniently there's no number to call.

Do you remember the MAD Magazine piece on magazine renewal? It was a classic- published back in the '60s.

The collection center didn't threaten you if you didn't buy another subscription did they? That's BS.

Yeah Heidi comes in with the letter and sees collection notice on the front of the envelope. She asks what it is and I have to explain this scam to her.

The same thing happened to me a TOP RATED audiophile magazine sent me a notice like you from a collection service noting I have not paid my renewal. I do not want to renew.

Intimidation won't win them subscribers. Only bad press. Especially when it happens to someone in the industry.

Same here. I let the few subscriptions I had lapse when bookstores trended towards having a free reading section.

Finally got my issue resolved with Stereophile, got a live person. It appears all online request for a subscription (paper) mailed to you has a automatic renew.
"Preferred Automatic Renewal Program: We will continue to renew your TEN: The Enthusiast Network subscription at the rate then in effect, without interruption, unless you tell us to stop. "

The digital version appears to not have that same auto renew addon, so I'm going to save some trees and go the digital route.
