What's everyone up to this weekend? What's on your audio calendar?

Me, just finished burning in two new and latest variety VPI 12-inch armwands for the table so can mount the Atlas SL in one and Ortofon MCA95 in the other and compare. Atlas has been sitting there for a couple of months looking rather forlorn and asking when it's going to be used. Member Bonzo75/Ked is dropping by on his last day in the city to have a listen. Then it's calibrating and installing Nick Doshi's new tape preamplifier in the system.

In between? Maybe the new Bourne movie. Saw the new Star Trek last weekend.

My weekend is less busy than yours. Meeting up tomorrow to give a days worth of DC tour to a young lady that worked for me in the past.
We have tickets for the Bourne movie Sunday morning. If I feel inspired I may switch out some of my longer cables, and post some things for sale.

I'm allergic to YARD work, that's why I've lived in a condo for 30 years.

Just a little bit of listening for me this afternoon. Bought a beautiful prime of Beef Tenderloin at Costco two weeks ago that I cut into steaks, so tonight I'll fire up the BBQ and enjoy a nice dinner on the back deck. Definitely going to see Jason Bourne, but we'll go on Tues/Wed afternoon to avoid the initial rush.

The only audio related thing I have going on this weekend is upgrading my music server/notebook to Win10! If that goes well, on Sunday I may finally install my new DC Motor / Controller in my Linn.
Probably go see Star Trek, too.

Audio may be on hold this weekend. After having gone to Whistler, my son and I caught the Enduro/DH bug and will be demoing Pivot bikes tomorrow. And, if the weather holds up on Sunday, doing some DH at a local MTB park. The sport is both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time! (ha, just like audio!).

yeah, but the worst that can happen in audio is breaking a cantilever, with cycling you can break your back.

        • #7
Well, I've done the former, hopefully I'll avoid the latter!

Neither. I was joking. I'm never going to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. My plan for most weekends is not to have a plan. I work all week and the weekends are usually spent catching up on chores and listening to music. Today is Mexican Saturday. Homemade shredded beef taquitos are on the menu with homemade salsa and avocado and my world famous margaritas.

I couldnt see that your tongue was firmly planted in check while you wrote that. as for tacos and margs, sounds great! im too lazy to make either esp when there are 20 joints within 20 mins of here that hand make fresh tortillas, birria, carnitas, lengua, cabeza, etc etc and 100% puro agave margs.

Had me too though thought it was a little strange. Put it down to being another side of Mark that I didn't know about. I did a hot air balloon ride once when down in San Diego and it's the last time. Never again.

I don't have any Mexican restaurants that are close and the ones that are within 25-30 minutes are nothing special. Most salsa around here comes from canned tomatoes, a few pieces of onion and cilantro. It tastes like crap. Good salsa is relatively expensive to make given the cost of fresh Roma tomatoes which is why so much of it around here gets poured out of a can of stewed tomatoes. Many places still make margaritas with antifreeze (green slime mix in a glass bottle) or a powdered mix.

So Cal would more than satisfy your culinary predilections. every region of mexico is represented here, enclaves like Santa Ana and Boyle Heights have taquerias everywhere you look, they seem to multiply x5 every year. I haven't eaten salsa from a jar since i was a little kid.

I would never live in So Cal. Too crowded, too expensive with housing ridiculously overpriced. But yes, great Mexican restaurants including some of the chains.

agreed, i would have never admitted this in my youth but im looking forward to eventually moving back to the 'sticks' where there are wide open spaces, clean air and no congestion. As for the food scene out here, the culinary landscape never looked better in So. Cal and I mean we had some very sad years prior to the '90s.

We're visiting the grandkids this weekend in LA. Agreed, a place I would never live. Traffic is bad (except for Sunday morning). Most natives stay off the freeways and take the city streets which are normally much faster, really meaning less slow. Housing is crazy expensive. My daughter just moved into their new home (their first one) - an almost 80 year old fixer upper which took them over a year to get fixed up! Fortunately it is a block and a half from our granddaughter's school (where she begins Kindergarten in a couple of weeks), and the new light rail is three blocks away, so our daughter doesn't have to drive downtown to work.

What has improved is the cultural environment. Lots of activity in the arts world and classical music, the the LA Philharmonic and Dudamel and Disney Hall is quite good. Probably more ethnic diversity than almost anywhere. So the food scene, Korean, Ethiopean, Vietnamese, etc. in addition to Mexican, is very rich. A lot of people are trying to create a real sense of community in this sprawling maze of neighborhoods and suburbs.

Nice to live in the Bay Area and only come down to visit.

                    Larry
