  • RM Root Mastering Myth or Magic

A keen Belgian, Guillaume Chalaron has created an algorithm that aims (as I understand it) to restore the master (sic) to original analog sound. Demonstrating at Munich Hi Fi show this year with Joseph speakers stand, evidenced readily audible improvement over commercial copies - DSD/Flac. You can hear this intro demo on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=KIcUD1bzSr8

Wondering what you all think? This opportunity seems worthwhile and requires a strong business mind to support implementation in the market. Given the current MQA tales, such new tech can struggle to reach their market.

It appears you have to send your file to him for correcting , is that how I read this

    Also from his site http://www.rootmastersound.com/home/

it sounds like he runs your file thru an algorithm that he is not ready to sell or distribute at this time, then he sends the processed file back to you. Long term I would think he would just sell the algorithm/processor software and you process the files yourself.

There are dozens of sites like these that run your files through algorithms to make it sound "better".

I wonder how many of them just do standard digital audio editing like expansion, EQ, etc.

many steps are in the RM process
usual conversion eq expansion deblurring etc used by mastering engineers take a long time
but the main RM algorithm makes the difference

Looks like MQA without the end to end pathway. Doesn't have much detail, as expected, on the website. Wonder if he will be able to give a coherent explanation with the "baffle them with BS" explanation that is common or whether he'll just cloak it as some secret sauce that can't be revealed. Time will tell.

MQA found a way to use ultra sonic to audible range by folding it
That is not possible from cd16 44
The RM works on preringing but also on restoring the dynamic range lost in the studio after mastering

Beaur why don't ask him. He's very polite and sociable. Guillaume Chalaron is on Facebook under his name as well as his business name Root Mastering.

I am happy to let things play out. Digital for me is currently background music for most listening. If we are together socially over a drink or dinner I'll more than happily ask as I find most online technical discussions/explanations too prone to misinterpretation.

I just checked with Jeff. 'Twasn't him. It was another speaker company called Jo speakers. Honest mistake!

          Oops...

i did did find some more tech explanations on Guillaume's website, but too difficult to post here at least using my iPhone. Suffice that he certainly seems to have uncovered a very nice process that to my ears at least returns digital tracks to a significant copy of an analog recording

notably the rise and fall of instrument notes, echo and reverberation all seem to my ears to restore a track to a live feeling. The properties of the location become evident...
