I have mentioned before that I have a new Bluesound Vault 2 server which has streaming as well and is MQA ready. I took a subscription to Tidal. I read just a few days ago on TAS CES digital review from a Robert Harley that MQA is only available currently on a desk top computer. I assume it will be available on mobile devices, I use an iPad, soon. So for now listening to Tidal as cd quality. Nevertheless enjoying the variety available. BTW, my wife read yesterday that Sprint has bought a piece of Tidal. Not sure if the Vault 2 server is the same as the Node 2 from Bluesound, however from what I have read the Node 2 can play full MQA without the use of a desk top pic. About 10 years ago, I started critical listening to pure black discs. I bought a $600 reduplicator and a couple of hundred black discs. I would first listen to a Redbock CD and then make a copy of it, since the reduplicator inverts digital polarity, I would then have to copy the inverted disc to get a positive disc to play. I was shocked to find the black discs sounded far more dynamic than the original CD. BTW: The first widely used example of inverted digital polarity was actually done intentionally. Diana Ross of Supremes fame actually cheated. Her mic was wired in correct digital polarity, while the mic that the 3 other Supremes shared was intentionally wired in inverted digital polarity, which had the effect of making Diana Ross sound more dynamic, the difference is huge. My next step was to create a simple test to determine, if my systems were wired in correct digital polarity. I simply recorded several CD's in both correct and inverted digital polarity. If, the CD recorded in inverted digital polarity sounded better, I knew something in my system was inverting. All kinds of equipment invert and the manufacturers do not always tell you that any given piece of equipment does. Some DAC's and CD players have a switch, which allows you to change the polarity. The difference is not really subtle, the disc in correct digital polarity will always sound far more dynamic.
Why do the black CD's copied directly from Redbook CD's sound better and/or more analog?
I can't give you a technical answer, but the same is true of the glass CD's and the SHM CD's.
Obviously, the material, which the black CD;s are made of allow the laser to pick up more of the original signal and/or they enable faster de-coding, which sounds far better. To complete my testing, I used blank regular CD's, which still enabled me to determine correct digital polarity, but did not sound as dynamic as the black CD's.
Once you rip the black CD's to a computer server, they lose their advantage and sound identical to the original Redbook CD's.
Those of you with far more knowledge about the digital domain, please weigh in with your opinions.Comment
