  • New Systems Generate New Problems

That Murphy's Law for IT is just as easily applied to high-end audio! If Murphy was still alive, what observations do you think he would come up with about audio?

Something like the system always sounds best before something is going to break?

Or you will always find a lost record when its replacement arrives?

Myles the second example has happened several times to me. I guess I shouldn't have music spread all over the house.

One of the Murphy law formulations is that any wire cut exactly to length will always show to be too short. Unfortunately it reveals to be true most of the time with ICs and speaker cables - it is why I always get cables significantly longer than needed.
My opinions rely on listening mainly to acoustical, non amplified music. I do not care about electronic music or listening to rock at stadium levels, but I enjoy Mahler and Shostakovitch.

if you're into LP playback, tubes and 'stats (and now tape) 1) you're a masochist 2) you're kinda used to something taking a dump...when I switch the system on its like a living breathing organism, you get the warm glow from the tube filaments/heaters, there's an ever so slight motor whine from the 'table and depending on the humidity a slight crackle here and there off the stat panels. Sometimes I cross my fingers other times I revel in the mystery of it all, but its all worth it when the music comes on

Years back when I did a little racing there variations on a truism of the times. "Owning an Italian (60s - 70s) motorcycle is like having a psychotic nymphomaniac girlfriend, everybody should try it once." Substitute exotic hi-end music system for either choice in the above statement.

Or another one related to record collecting. Just when you find that record you've been hunting for years and against all better judgement plunk down big bucks, you find another copy for $10.

lemme guess...was that Flamenco Fever? it happened to me all the time, look at the bright side, the big bucks your first copy cost you is probably its actual worth and the cheap copy you lucked into is - almost - like free money.

No it wasn't actually. No specific albums come to mind- just a general observation.

Myles you mean like now that I got the system I always dreamed of I'm going back to my old job and will have about 90% less free time?

About a year ago, I "lost" my stone mint original of Casino Royale OST. I searched my collection everywhere to no avail. I finally gave up and purchased a classic records reissue off ebay which wasn't bad, but about a month later, you guessed it, I found the original. What a waste of time and money. Ive got to be more careful when I file my records.

If you turn on your system and everything works it's not high end audio.
