I discovered Boyk in 1978 when I saw this article in New West magazine. It is still relevant today. He's a very interesting guy.

Here's more of Boyk's writing. If you click on the link in the upper left hand corner, you can see his recordings and other stuff he's done.

That aside I think Boyk's comments on the differences between tube and ss gear, particularly the recreation of harmonic structure, interesting. Why is there something magical about all tube recordings?

Obviously both technologies have greatly improved since the publication of this article but I don't think the sound of tubes and solid state are converging. Both techs do what they always do but just better with less artifacts. As good as the best solid-state gear is, there's just a certain "magic" that emerges every time you go back to your tube gear. On the other hand, don't think tubes will ever quite have the quietness of solid-state.

I wonder how people who mix a tube preamp with a solid-state amp or vice versa feel. I felt that perhaps Marty Marty Waxman was getting the best of both world's with the VTL pre and Spectral amp. Not sure I would have liked a Spectral amp/preamp combo.
