  • Roy Allison Passes at Age 88

Sadly his passing was seemingly missed by many. Roy had a tremendous impact both on audio equipment and the birth of high-end audio magazines. Back in the '50s, Allison hired J. Gordon Holt to be Audiocraft magazine's tape editor and it was at Audiocraft that Gordon learned his craft. When I was a newbie to the hobby, you couldn't go into a store and not hear those weirdly shaped Allison speakers nestled in the corners of the room. Unfortunately never heard the Allison speakers ever sound good.

Through the years, Mr. Roy Allison was highly regarded in his field and will be missed in the high-fidelity loudspeaker industry as one of the premiere designers of the formative audio years.

He and Villchur at AR. And is maybe not given the credit due for designing the old AR table.

What's fascinating is just how many of the pioneers in audio learned their craft in the military during WWII. Another name that comes to mind is William Z. Johnson. 😄

Sid Smith too I do believe. The end of WWII saw a bunch of highly trained electronic techs and electrical engineers bringing their skills to designing tube audio gear. That's back when men were men and most were building their own gear in those days either from kits or scratch.

IIRC correctly, the first product (s) from WZJ was modified Dynaco tube kits?

He did mods for the ST-70 amp which you still see come up for sale. I believe he converted them to run 6L6 output tubes.
