  • How Often Do You Get Together Each Month With Your Audiobuddies?

Audiophilia is often a solitary hobby but that need not be so! There's so much more to the hobby to share with friends and strangers. One can invite newbies--or even musicians or those in the music industry--into your home and introduce them to high-end audio. One have music get togethers at audiobuddies homes. One can bring equipment over and do comparisons. One can even set up local audio clubs (sadly, a dying breed nowadays). Nor should the aspect of learning from hearing more and more systems and what they can and can't do (shows are often a poor substitute for hearing equipment in a properly set up environment!).

We have a audio club here in New Orleans and usually meet the last Thursday of the month. Every member is asked to host or co host one meeting per year.

I know someone who belongs to that club (if indeed it's the same one). I know him from another forum, so I only know his first name, which is Fred. He's a lawyer.

Never belonged to an audio club, but we did have 5 guys that got together quarterly on a rotating basis. It was mostly about music though.

I know Fred quite well, matter of fact I brought him into the club...

On the audiobuddy front. I usually try to make it across Central Park to have some fun listening to music with a couple of friends every Sunday. Not a whole lot of equipment discussion but more change the VTA/SRA, etc. I've noticed among my friends (not myself though) that they've become less into the equipment and more into the collecting or music fronts.

Then I try to have one person over to listen at my place each month. Occasionally those visitors will include manufacturers or distributors too. Heidi keeps pushing me to have more people over and we all know the wife is right. It's all good though. I love having people over and pulling obscure LPs or tapes off the shelves and watching them pull their cellphones out and taking pictures. I'll never forget the first time I saw some snap a photo of an album and thought what a great idea!

Lately I've been making a pronounced effort to have people over every week to listen with. As much as listening to one's audio system is often a solitary experience, it's a lot more fun listening together with other audiophiles.

mine is between 0 and 1, which depends on if the meetings are close enough. I just don't have a hankering to drive 3-6 hours (Round Trip) to listen to someones system for 3 hours then turn around and drive back.

Ha, the beauty of digital. I go to shows and if exhibitors only have one list of what's in the room or just wrote something on a board, I will snap a shot off for my report.

No longer audio buddies but music buddies. There are 3 or 4 who come over maybe 4 times a year for a rock-n-roll night of music listening and wine drinking. They are not audiophiles but just music lovers who like to get together to listen. When we have people over for dinner, we always end up in the music room listening.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any audiophiles who live close to me. We have friends over for dinner and I usually give them a tour through my audio room, but for lots of people sitting in a chair and listening to music is a foreign experience.

Mark so true and if they do actually set down, there is usually one person or two that never stays quite long enough to even hear the music,

I find some people who say they like listening to music have a hard time sitting down and just listening. Some can't sit still, others can't stop talking.

Another great benefit of having audiobuddies come over.

It's so much easier to hear certain changes in the system, say moving room treatment around, changing a cartridge's azimuth if one person carries out the changes and the other person just sits in the chair and listens. I often find that you forget the sound in the time it takes you to stand up and make the change and then sit down. Experienced that in fact tonight when Marc Gomez was adjusting the SRA/VTA of the A95 while I sat and listened. The sonic changes were so unmistakable yet if I was doing it myself, not sure they would have been as easily heard.

A friend and I have a regularly scheduled Wednesday night listening session. In addition I occasionally have manufacturers or other audiophiles, probably a couple of times a month. I have on occasion had the local audio club over on a Saturday but find that is more than my listening room can comfortably accommodate.
