..... or am I late and just catching up.....

Just read this in Stereo Magazine ( German)

    "We are
    currently preparing a good
    part of the renowned Blue
    Note jazz catalog for the
    archive of Capitol Records.
    They come to us because
    of our technology and
    equipment. They want the
definitive copy of these legendary albums. They
get 24/96 and 24/192 files from the old master
tapes, which of course can also be downloaded.
Certainly with respect to the stage, they are
produced in a similar way to the LPs once made
by the famous Rudy Van Gelder."

PS: I don't mean remastering generally - I mean this specific "event".

Additional thought - Maybe this is old information for everyone, but personally I found the whole article fascinating and
a real education for a "neophyte""

    "I N T E R V I E W B E R N I E G R U N D M A N
    HOW SUCCESSFUL
    DO YOU WANT YOUR
    RECORD TO BE?
Mastering engineer Bernie Grundman has influenced the sound of many top
albums. This and his passion for the best sound make him an institution. He told
STEREO how he achieves his ambitions in his hard day-to-day work and, at the
same time, stands up to some of the madness of the music business."

Seems you can't read the article unless a subscriber?

I think he's talking about these releases Andy?

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Blue Note Records, the label will be reissuing in 2014 100 classic Blue Notes on 180 gram vinyl beginning with five on March 25th: Art Blakey's Free For All, Coltrane's Blue Train, Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch, Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil and Larry Young's Unity.

On Wednesday March 12th Blue Note President Don Was sat down with me to talk about the Blue Note vinyl reissues he's producing for the label. He's a music executive who is also an acclaimed musician and producer. A Detroit native and University of Michigan Ann Arbor drop out, Was's first group Was (Not Was) released four commercially successful albums during the 1980's. He's produced and recorded with everyone from The Rolling Stones to Solomon Burke and of course he produced Bonnie Raitt's classic album Nick of Time 1990's "Album of the Year" Grammy Award winner.

The first four 75th anniversary Blue Note vinyl reissues arrived the other day. The fifth, Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch, has been delayed. First the great news: United's 120g pressings are very good! They are flat, and other than the usual dimples that seem to afflict many URP records and some "striation" often seen on URP pressings, the sealed records were defect free and better yet, they were uniformly quiet.

The downside to the article is just how poorly many companies kept their master tapes and of course, the disastrous Atlantic Records fire.

Then again this is old news.

Valuable original recordings and rare tapes have vanished over the years—a process that Jack White and the National Recording Preservation Foundation are looking to stop.
