Graham Slee gear has a very good reputation. Never heard it myself but there has hardly been a bad word spoken about it in the Uk where he does most of his Business.

found this good to know too: "Talk about Graham Slee and you think of small phono and headphone amplifiers of excellent audio quality... But, and many of you will know my BBC background, I remember spending many a lonely night working in Bush House sitting in front of one of the mixing desks he made whilst working as senior engineer at Audionics. In those days the BBC ushered quality and precision. Graham Slee has continued that zest for making the best since then, with his own projects under the label GSPAudio (Graham Slee Projects).

I used a GS phono pre for several years. It was one that allowed for variable EQ for my older vinyl. It did not have a lot of gain (good for a high output MC or a MM). So I also got a GS Elevator, which provides an additional 20 db of gain for normal MC cartridges. I still use the Elevator for my Miyajimi Zero with my phono pre.

I liked the GS phono pre but it didn't have as much flexibility in the different EQ settings so I had Bottlehead build a custom phono pre for me.

I haven't heard the GS. But for $1k the project phonobox RS is great. Xlr/rca input and output. Can run 2 tables, one rca and one xlr at same time. On the fly loading at on front. Riaa or decca. 40-66db gain. (Also on front) standby option too.

Are there any tube MC phono stages for the same price as the GS?

Thanks for this Myles! Since I generally prefer MM/MI cartridges this might be a unit I should go and audition. I've tried several units in the $750-$1,000 price category and none have grabbed me.

this one is MM, first one is MC

Whats nice about a MM phono stage is you can add a SUT or a head amp later and use moving coils too.

I plan on getting an Era Gold (or Reflex M) with PSU1 and an Elevator SUT. This will replace my Manley Chinook SE.
