well headroom claims if you use a true balanced source and headphones wired in balanced configuration, you get better sound.
The unit also has a defeatable crossfeed circuit that improves center imaging.

FWIW, I bought it as a high quality analog headphone amp to use in the unbalanced mode. I also has a built in dac which I
        don't need at this time, another feature is use as a preamp with both balanced and unbalanced in and out. Don't need that either;

Ok. While in some specs noise can be lower it's mostly not true. What is good is a bigger voltage swing due to both voltage rails being out of phase. So of its 28 volts Se it's now 56 volts as an example. This some say gives better dynamics. Again JC u know this as well.
I can add an amp that's better matched for the Imp of the headphones and has ample power is far more important

an example of you have a low imp phone and a high imp amp it stinks and effects the tone big time
or also can make the phones have noise as well. This noise can be fixed with a resistor network that makes the phones see a lower imp and the amp is better loAded.
Phones are complicated as you know and what many claim is just wrong lol. It's sad
I use phones to help confirm my room setup better and I use a few phones and two amps as well.
          analog stuff.

I have no personal experience with it, but I believe it was in the running for ‘best headphone amp at any price’ in its day (a few years back). Certainly, headroom wrote the book on audiophile grade dedicated headphone amps.
SME 10/IV, Lyra Kleos, Koetsu Blavk Goldline, Cotter Mk. 2L sut, Naim cd 3.5 2/ flatcap 2, Audioengine D2 WiFi dac (for streaming from iMac desktop), Plinius Hautonga, Totem Forest Signature, MIT Shotgun S1 phono, S3 (cd player), SL3 (dac), MIT StyleLink Plus usb, Shotgun S1 speaker cable with AQ jumpers, RGPC Substation and1200S, Marigo Ultra and Reference power cords, Burson Soloist, Focal Elear with Silver Dragon wire or Hifiman HE560 with clone ZMF Universe sheepskin pads and Furutech/Mogami wire, VPI 16.5 and other miscellaneous and sundry widgets, thingamabobs and doodads.

Click image for larger version Name:	HRMBHA.jpg Views:	5 Size:	229.5 KB ID:	123576 got the amp today and my first impression was this thing is a brick, must weigh about 30 pounds net.
after about 30 minute setup, I auditioned in this order fm tuner, spotify. CD, old recording LP, modern recording LP.
Everything sounded excellent considering the source and difference between sources are easily heard.
As it turns out this was a fully optioned model with both the DAC and the premium 50K Alps volume pot
options installed. Considering these units had original list price near $4K, and I got it for only $600, I'm very satisfied.
I could probably resell it for a tidy profit, but it sounds so good and I need it so I will be keeping and using it.

PS Im using Sony pro MDR-F1 cans in unbalanced mode

I have one called the Blockhead which is the better one. Never failed me in all these years....sounds great. I'm using Sennheiser earphones with Cardas cable to the phones that plug in via XLR...totally balanced. I think they are still in business....call them with questions that you might have. In many ways they are preferred to my multi thousand dollar speakers. very very clean...no hum/noise at all.
