how loud and how far do we sit ? Just curios loudness can be determined by if someone is sitting next to you can you speak to them . Hiw far in feet please . For me I sit back almost 15 feet or so , but I have desk centered after it . Louder is nice but from a distance I guess the sound develops more I have no idea why . Some instruments sound better at a greater distance . Vocals are fine at the seat , now bass the ilussive details this also at a greater distance too. While at some friends places further has its virtues too.

In my small dedicated music room I have two rows of seating. The closest seats I would describe as near-field and the furthest seats as far-field. When I sit in the first row (red zone), it's like my head is inside a bubble of the original acoustic venue of recordings, and this is my favorite, it's like virtual reality, "you-are-there". The second row (blue zone) is like I am looking at the stage, with a "they-are-there" experience. Whats really cool is that I can change the perspective to fit my mood. I find that people usually prefer one location over the other, as a matter of taste.

I sit about 10ft away from my speakers or about 1.2 times their distance from each other. In my current dedicated room (14' X 17' X 8') it took months to get everything sounding right. Finally with a test tone CD I realized there was a suck-out in the lower midrange. Moving my listening couch about 6 inches forward corrected it.
Normally I don't listen too loud. When I have friends over for rock and roll night, it is turned up much louder but we can still lean over and talk.Thiel 7.2s, Manley NeoClassic 250s, Wadia 850, MIT Oracle V3 speaker cables, MIT MI-350 Oracle interconnects, Black Diamond Racing Shelves and Cones in a dedicated room with ASC Tube Traps, Room Tunes and 3 X 20 amp dedicated circuits.

I'm going to have to put casters on my chair, as the best spot tends to change depending on the recording. This has not changed since my first system and the various iterations since.
Currently the center of the tweeters is 3' 3" from the side walls, 4' 5" from the rear wall, 6' 9" between tweeters and my listening distance can range from 7' to 10' depending once again on my preference for a particular recording. The nearfield is quite good for those recordings with adequate spatial cues, on recordings with fewer cues the greater distance tends to be, but not always, preferable. Adding that the toe in is slightly different between the two speakers, it seems to be aa little better that way but cannot describe exactly why.
Every recording seems to a point in volume where the sound comes alive, coalesce into a more coherent and believable reproduction. With some recordings this window is at modest levels and a narrow volume range. With other recordings I can turn the volume level to 11 for all you Spinal Tap fans and so I do. Every once in awhile I want to be awash and immersed in the sound so the experience becomes more physical rather than simply an intellectual exercise or low level mood.

One more factor is that Al and Joe have line-source loudspeakers and others might have point source. The two cohere different. Also, sound pressure drop-off is 6dB per doubling of distance with point-source and 3dB for line-source. In Joe's room, I prefer the blue zone - just like I prefer usually around row M in a concert hall.

I do not have any side wall absorption. In fact the only absorption I have is the floor carpet and record storage at the back of the room. I am a fan of the LEDE (Live End Dead End) approach. My front and side walls are reflective. The adjustable diffusers are designed to reduce/eliminate reflections from the speakers under 20 ms.

Sitting at various positions front to back has effects on a few aspects
one being the bass output in varies a bit due to a bass bump I have not been able to completely make neutral
second is staging it does not make any sound tone change but for them to melt away I need to be about 18 feet. As I go closer there is odd sounds that remove me from them pksying over there. While as Gary says the drop off is less
I play louder then most here so sestingvto make it a certain volume matters a bit less. Meaning it's loud weather I am at 12/15//18 from front plain of towers.analog stuff.

I gutted and completely re-did a pair of Green Mountain Audio "Imagos" in order to maintain phase coherency the optimum listening position is the same as the distance between the 2 speakers, which gives you some flexibility. It was quite a chore to find drivers, which work with the upgraded first order cross-overs, but well worth it!
