It was very Atkinsonian. A tortuous read. Nonetheless, despite an 180-degree difference in approach, we agree on final conclusions for several gears.

I found the measurements writeup more interesting than the review.

Martin Colloms also reviewed the S5 Mk. 2 and included measurements too.

the main thing I learned from the measurements is its a four ohm speaker

The mk. 2 is nominally a four ohm speaker though it does dip down below four ohms. The more important point is that it doesn't dip as low as the Mk. 1 and is easier to drive. My cj eat the speaker up. Though, like many speakers, the Mk. 2 does have one area where is has a large phase angle making it a little harder to drive.

And I ran the Mk. 1s with the 50 wpc Kondo. My guess the Kondo would sound even better with the Mk. 2s.

Atkinson's writing is damn dry, but his measurement sections are well worth it. He shoudl stick to editing and measuring.

Has anyone else noticed that Dudley has just about taken over the auditioning and writing portion of the magazine? Almost all of the reviewers are following his Shindo - Orangutan philosophies. Not, I'm just as enamored as some over getting deals on older equipment that used to be class A, but I'm not one for that older somewhat rolled off, softer sound that his followers seem to enjoy.

Thanks Tasos! And thanks for your other kind comments! I think the problem often is that the only place audiophiles get to hear gear nowadays is at audio shows. And at best that's a crap shoot. Opinions can often be changed after hearing gear in a system where the owner spent time optimizing the sound. And then there's always finding the right synergy of products too. I really think the Magicos excel with tubes. 'Course some feel that way about a lot of speakers. There's no denying whatever side of the fence you stand on that well designed tube products do have a different magic to them than solid-state. For me it's an aliveness.
