Then there is question: upon what do you prefer kitty to wreak disaster: grills or drivers?

For super duper critical listening the bottoms come off, but this is the default.

I'd say it depends on the speakers. I know it isn't common, but some are designed to have the grill cloths on, while some (most?) aren't.

This one is easy for me. My speakers don't have any.
If they did, off during all listening and then back on as dust covers while not in use.

I would love to be able to keep the grills on but they´re so damn ugly! (And wrecks the sound)

In the past, drivers have been damaged by pets, small children and morons who just had to poke a dome tweeter. So unless I'm listening alone the grills stay on.

Typically I have grilles off if it is appropriate. With the Beveridge Electrostatics I had to build my own space frame and stretch over acoustically transparent grill cloth to replace the foam grill that was not original and dampened the sound.

For the ESLs I use the front grills off but I keep the back damping on- these ones usually are elevated they are just in test mode here:

Harbeth M40.1. Usually grills on, once in a while I remove them for just a touch more top end. I never notice anything lacking with the grills on and they are very coherent speakers.

I agree. I would say that most speakers sound better with the grills off. However...there are some speakers that have baffled grills. They will usually sound better with the grills attached.

The speakers were usually voiced with the grills in place. (That's what Richard Vandersteen told me)

That's cause your speakers look so good without them.
