  • Avalon Saga

Has anybody heard them? They're out for some time now but unfortunately I haven't read any useful information on their sound especially in comparison to the Isis. They are available for demo in Boulder and Delaware (Overture), were presented in one or maybe two shows in Asia but unfortunately no sign of them in Europe...

There is a fairly rampant thread over at WBF which has being going since 2015 about those speakers. The price of the premium version is approaching Magico M6 territory. If you could stretch that far, I would take the M6's over the Saga in a heartbeat. Another speaker worth considering in that price range would be the Vandersteen 7 Mk2's + matching M7-HPA mono blocks. You could snare that combo for less than the base model Saga.

Hi Bodhi...have you had the opportunity to hear/listen to the Saga?

I know that thread on WBF Bodhi. I opened it. And thank you for your suggestion but Magico is not my cup of tea.

Ah ok. I was not closely following your thread over at WBF. I was just aware of it. Sorry I clearly couldn't be more helpful.

Wish could help you out. Last Avalons I heard were the 20k Indras with Nagra electronics and Kronos. Sounded very, very good and seemed to have very little of what I consider the old Avalon "sound." Much mellower with really nice timbre and resolution. Rene was there early on one day and got to play a half dozen albums including that amazing Jeton D2D Moonlight Serenade. Sounded heavenly! Maybe should give Terry a shout out and see about going down there.

Sagas are reference speakers at Overture (they're also selling B&W, Magico, Focal, Martin Logan, Magnepan...) and they are constantly available for demonstration with Spectral electronic and MIT cables. Since Overture is not that far from Big 🍎 it would be great if you could visit them one day. Their room seems to be nicely done an your opinion would really help Myles...I was talking with Terry a while ago and he was very helpful but there is no substitute for firsthand experience.

Did Terry say what electronics they are using with the Sagas?

No but based on photos of their room I speculate they use Spectral or Audio Research.

Hi Marcus! Reached out to Terry and will take the train down to Wilmington on the 26th to hear the Sagas.

System will be Spectral electronics including the amps, line stage and CD player. Phonostage-since Spectral's own, new and highly anticipated model won't finally be released until probably early 2018-is the top of the line ARC. The turntable will be the Basis Inspiration plus Superarm 9 outfitted with a My Sonics Reference cartridge (or possibly something even newer!).

                Stay tuned.

Myles, just wondering if you managed to listen to the SAGA on the 26th and if so, are you planning to write about your impressions? Many thanks

I would certainly second the Vandersteen suggestion. I don't know the Saga, but the V's are worthy of an audition.

No the date was postponed because Terry hurt his back while out on the West Coast. Will be rescheduling though as soon as Terry is up to it.

Ok, many thanks for feedback. I had heard that Keith Jarrett was one of Terry's customers....possibly Avalon but not sure.

Sorry for the late reply to your earlier post Siddh. I haven't had t he pleasure of hearing these speakers. My Dealer carries Avalon, though i've only heard the Indra's, Transcendent & Eidolon Diamond. The Indra's have really nice tonality, a touch of warmth & nice balance. They're fun speakers. The Eidolon Diamond is a very coherent, resolving, sophisticated speaker with fine resolution. Not the last word in deep bass, though that's why you have a speaker like the Saga.
