  • Magico "A" series speaker?

Anyone heard anything about a new Magico speaker, designated A, a three way dual woofer tower looks to be smaller than the S5.

  • #2
Maybe a cheaper version of the S3? The sneak preview adds the speaker makers run, really crack me up.

Yes, there is going to be a smaller version of the M3, but I don't know what it'd be called

This new speaker looks to be the first in a new entry level series for Magico, A3? The price should be around $10-$12; well below the S1 Mk2. At that price point, there is some stiff competition however from Joseph Audio, Vandersteen, Devore and others. The speaker retains most of Magico's core technologies; aluminium cabinets, beryllium tweeters, carbon fibre drivers (possibly with Nano-tubes and graphene-reinforcement) & Elliptical Symmetry crossovers. It will be interesting to read the final spec in Magico's Press Release due out soon!

You Say You Want A Revolution

          Magico Introduces the A3

Machined into the metal of every Magico loudspeaker is a subtle, yet permanent, “M”. Our symbol is a simple reminder to the owner of a Magico product that they have purchased a product born of an uncompromised, unapologetic pursuit of performance excellence. The standards we have set for a product bearing our M logo are not without consequence. The push forward into the development of new, exotic, costly technologies and materials has meant that these products are accessible only to a fortunate few. While we have long wanted to bring a more affordable product to the market, and despite constant experimentation and testing of various methods for reducing costs to achieve this goal, the results have always fallen short of earning the Magico M engraving.

Through Dedication. Passion. Knowledge. We welcome you to the impossible made possible. Magico is proud to launch the A series. At long last a Magico loudspeaker obtainable for a wider audience; the A3 brings together a bevy of technologies unheard-of at its price point. A fully braced and anodized aluminum enclosure, beryllium tweeter, carbon Nanographene cones, neodymium based motor systems and our renowned elliptical crossover, the A3 is the impossible made possible.

High Frequency driver - Extended high frequencies are provided by a newly designed Magico pure beryllium-diaphragm tweeter with an optimized 28-mm dome surface based on the fundamental design platform and geometry of the M-Project tweeter. The customized neodymium motor system is encased in an improved back chamber with our latest generation damping materials that facilitate ultra-low distortion, higher power handling, massive dynamic capabilities and extended linear voice coil movement.

Midrange Frequency driver - The newly developed 6-inch midrange employs a Multi-Wall carbon fiber cone with a layer of XG Nanographene, providing optimal stiffness to weight ratios and an ideal damping factor. Overhung neodymium based motor systems incorporate extra-large magnets to ensure a stabilized magnetic field in the 75-mm pure titanium voice coils of both the midrange and bass drivers.

Low Frequency Drivers - Dual 7-inch woofers incorporate a version of the new Gen 8 Magico Nano-Tec cone. The same properties and materials that allow for the proper combination of stiffness, mass and damping are carried through to the lowest frequencies. The chassis has also been simulated and tested for the optimal combination of stiffness and damping. Minimum acoustical impact is achieved through reducing vibration modes while maximizing air flow. A new overhung neodymium (N48) based motor system anchors the low frequency reproducers to accomplish a super stabilized magnetic field. A pure Titanium, 75mm voice coils are consistent with the technology utilized through the midrange.

The A3 Midrange and Low frequency drivers were optimized for minimal music related distortions in its band pass, in both the frequency and time domains using latest state of the art FEA simulation of acoustical, mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal behavior. All of this is now being done on a single platform, allowing Magico to take the next step in performance optimization.

Crossover - All four drivers in the A3 are acoustically integrated using Magico’s proprietary Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology that utilizes state-of-the-art components from Mundorf of Germany. The 3-way network features a 24 db per octave Linkwitz-Riley filter that maximizes frequency bandwidth while preserving phase linearity and minimizing intermodulation distortion.

Enclosure - The A3’s massive sealed-enclosure is, like all Magicos, a tour-de-force of engineering. The enclosure is made entirely from 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminum, identical materially to the enclosure developed for the Q Series. This braced, complex internal structure is finished externally with an elegant brushed anodized “skin”. The A3 enclosure is best considered as a simplified Q Series design, with the same materials, the same craftsmanship, and the same attention to design and build detail.

A Magico - The A3 is in design, execution and performance a Magico. Unapologetic. Uncompromising. The Magico A3. The impossible made possible.

One thing I can confirm. Over the years, Alon and I have talked about an “entry” level Magico speaker. And every time, Alon has responded he wouldn’t make a lesser priced speaker, just to make a lesser priced speaker. He wouldn’t compromise and that speaker would have to embody and stay true to his design philosophies. So this will truly be an interesting speaker to hear.

What’s interesting to me is Magico launched both a new SOTA Speaker (M6) and entry level speaker (A3), very close together.

Of course, Magico started a new A-line and one wonders what else is in store??? Guess a lot will depend on how the new A-line (like when the S-line was introduced) is received. The M-Pro (and M-Series) and S marked the end of the Q-line; on the other hand, some technology from the Q-Series enclosure is used in the new A-line. Interesting Magico now has three lines and how will that play out?

I sure it will sound good .. but for a company that also makes beautiful, its so Bauhaus

Thanks Myles. The larger 28mm BE done tweeter, bottom end frequency response & Q-series cabinet technology raised an eyebrow! Though Magico have traded the diamond-coated BE dome for the larger 28mm dome profile of the M Pro.

The new A3 model employs overhung neodymium-based motor system for the midrange & bass units, whilst the S5 Mk2's use underhung motor systems in the midrange units. Re: Underhung vs Overhung motor systems, maybe a technically minded member can describe the difference & pros/cons?

In any case, it looks like a winner around the $10-15k price point. Hail the new improved V3! .

Yup what I meant was, the A3's should be competitive with any offerings in that price range. However the proof's in the pudding as they say!

The press release says that the voice coil is pure titanium. I wonder if they meant to say the coil former is titanium, or if the conductive coil itself is titanium. Titanium being both much less conductive and lighter than copper the trade offs could be interesting if used as a conductor.

I should add that I am impressed that Magico is able to bring this much speaker to the price point. For those of us without a lot of discretionary income it presents a bit of a conundrum if the performance is there. How to stretch a budget (a lot).

Exciting new offering by Alon and Magico. The placement of the A-3 at the $10K price point is possibly brilliant. Let's first see/hear how it sounds.

I agree, though there is a risk the A series could eat into S series sales & hurt the re-sale value of current models.

Possibly but if we figure a factor of 4 markup:

                            A3 cost = $2500

                            S1 cost = $4000

                            S3 cost = $7000

                            S5 cost = $9750

Point is that gives Magico a lot of room for better parts, enclosures, etc as we move up the line. The only Speaker whose sales may be affected are the S1s.
