What features, in addition to great sound, are important to you in a line level preamplifier for a high end system? For example, do you a) have to have, b) want, or c) not want features like the following: mute switch, balance control, tone control, remote operation, digital display, surround sound pass through, etc. etc. I tend to be a minimalist. But I ma curious what others think. Thanks.

A balance control and a remote! All the remote really needs to do is volume and mute, but other functions are good too. Oh, and a fixed level output to hook up to a headphone amp.Steve Lefkowicz

Hi Bill,
I only need/would like these features in my preamp of choice:
- digital display that automatically turns off after last operation. This way I can keep the pre on 24/7 without worrying about LED burning out.
- remote
- mute button would be nice, but not necessary
I used to need a HT bypass, and had that in my Rowland pre, but no longer need that in my new setup.
HTH.Kronos Sparta -> Trinity Phono -> Trinity Pre -> CH Precision A1 -> Magico S7s

remote operation (very few [only one] company comes without remote operation?) --for me an absolute necessity
balanced/single ended input and outputs
mute switch
balance control (tape people can use this if no one else)
digital display (as Allen said can be turned off)
user programmable settings for each input (so I don't blast my ear out accidentally when going from one input to another)
absolute phase (?) remote control
