  • Visit to the VPI House!

VPI was hosting their annual dealer get together this weekend and Mat kindly extended an invitation to drop by on the final day. Several interesting systems were on display including the big, line array Creedo speakers from Switzerland.

The BIG system was headlined by the Creedo speakers from Switzerland and capably supported by Meitner Electronics (including Ed’s 1 kW, $85k monoblocks), VPI's new, super direct drive Vanquish table with 14-inch arm and vdh Crimson cartridge plus power supply and phonostage and Nordost cabling. The tonearm’s internal wiring runs uninterrupted from the cartridge pins to a LEMO connector into the phonostage.

This is the best I've heard these Swiss speakers and light years better than their presentations at Axpona and CAF last year. Jarre's Equinoxe was superbly rendered and was just a musical kaleidoscope painted on a huge three dimensional canvas . Fast, transparent and clean characterize these speakers. There was simply no exaggeration with either the violin or piano on Brahm's Sonata #1. Voices floated in the air on the AudioNautes reissue of the Proprius recording Now the Green Blade Riseth. The low end demonstrated some real startle factor and kick ass quality on the Ed Graham D2D disc.

My main issue was just a touch of dryness that slightly reduced the tonal colors. But who knows once Harry gets his Atlas Lambda back from Lyra?

Joseph Audio's new Pearl 3 speakers with graphene midranges, Moon Audio integrated amplifier, VPI HW40 turntable with vdh cartridge and vdh cabling. With a special guest appearance by a vintage Ampex ATR 102 reel-to-reel tape machine! Of course the tape deck was immediately made to feel at home with a sampler and Thelonius Monk tape. (Also gave the Gabriel/Bush 12-inch 45 rpm EP on the HW40.)

The room initially had some acoustical issues but the addition of a pair of bass traps in each corner definitely removed a glassy sheen from the music as well as improving resolution and imaging. (yes, never minimize the impact of any room upon the sound.) The traps really brought out the Pearl's strengths including their linearity, midrange and sounstaging.

VPI's main upstairs listening room featured a system comprised of Gershman speakers, Modwright integrated amplifier and phonostage, VPI HW40 and Prime Signature tables, $3000 vdh Frog and $1800 VPI Shyla cartridge and Nordost and vdh cabling. Everyone commented on how big the diminutive Gershman sounded.

New from VPI were the Nordost manufactured for VPI Weisline phonocables (reasonably priced and priced at $500-800 depending on length), the limited quantity $1800 VPI Bloodwood cartridge (the only cartridge Miyajima has made for someone else) and a prototype speed tachometer for their turntables (eventually will be built into the Avenger tables).

Great report Myles! Oh and great seeing you today. I am sorry I had to leave to the airport early as I would have loved to stay longer and spent more time listening with you.

Yes, very interesting to read, very entertaining.
Just a pity I like abroad and can't attend any of these.

                  Rooms looked clean and inviting.

I did not realize Nordost private labeled tone arm cables for VPI, and it looks like their new design as well.
