    Countdown to Axpona 2016

    Trip starts tomorrow and hope to run into lots of AN members out at the show! Please stop and say hi!

    Audionirvana will have plenty of presence at Axpona with a 1/2 page ad in the show booklet, plastic displays around the show promoting the site, a poster up in the Scaena speakers room as well as co-sponsoring Prudence Farrow Burns meet and greet in the Scaena room on Saturday (and a short Q&S about the site for interested audiophiles on Sunday in the Scaena room). In addition, I'll be moderating the reel-to-reel tape seminar that will go off on Friday PM with a world renowned panel of analog recording experts.

    Arrived in one piece and got a good two hours sleep on the flight from NYC to Chicago. Or thought I did. I was feeling beat and was thinking it was 5 PM and took a look at my phone. What? Only 1:30PM? Oh well glad there's a Starbucks in the lobby!

    Got to see many people today and had some great discussions with AJ van den Hul, AJ and Ken Stevens and Peter McGath, Larry Marcus and Nick Doshi. One bit that stunned me was AJ sharing that in 2016 he's making more cartridges than ever. So much that I really had a hankering to listen to one of his cartridges again! OK even more interesting was AJ sharing his love for reel to reel machines and that he owns two Telefunken machines (IIRC a 10 (?) and 15) that he rescued years ago from the dumpster.

    Dropped by the Magico room and Alon, Peter and Dave were busy setting up the system that -- gasp -- had the Kronos turntable not to mention Jonathan Horwich's tape deck and tapes. And tubes to boot. Ken Steven's big Statement amps with KT 150s (and Ultimate preamp) were in the process of being hooked up to the new S5s Mk. 2s! Now this oughta be a room to be reckoned with! No pictures yet because things were still in complete disarray.

    Watched Greg Beron and Jeremy Ryan assembling the MBL Xtremes. Let me tell you. It's no task for the faint of heart and a hernia maker and back breaker. (I noted everyone was wearing back braces.) Don't know if that was preventative or palliative?!?! On the other hand, those MBL amps were pretty monstrous on there own. One has to align the mounting struts and pray they are truly aligned when locking everything in place using some Allen screws.

    Searching around, found out there's going to be quite a few rooms sporting tape machines. Looks like Paul, Dan and Mike weren't so crazy after all. Just too a little while for audiophiles to catch on!

    Dropped by the Paragon Sight and Sounds room and got to watch Peter McGrath set up the new Alexx's ($109K) driven by Nick Doshi electronics. Above is the latest version of Nick's tape preamplifier.

    Got a half hour or so of listening in to tape, LP and some new DSD recordings by Peter McGrath. The DSD recordings of solo organ and piano were outstanding and it was interesting how Nick's KT 150 equipped monoblock tube amplifiers could really control the Alexx's bottom end! Also got to hear "Private Investigations" from LOG on tape and that too was really outstanding--especially considering the system was relatively cold and the amplifiers only had 75 hours of playing under their belt. Oh and the Brinkmann was sporting the Koetsu Azule Platinum I thought so highly of in my review.

    Artisan turntables in the "Exhibitors Showroom" portion of the show! Man how I wish I had a room for a second table. And that Ikeda 407 arm is total eye candy.

    Finally, the audionirvana advertisement in the show booklet turned out great, the ad is prominently featured in quite a few rooms in a plastic display holder and there's a nice poster blow up of the ad hanging in the Scaena room. (I definitely want to hear the Scaenas driven by the ARC Reference 75 too!

    Had a few more pics to share but for some reason, I keep getting a message saying the file is corrupted. Have no idea why.
