  • Opening Day 2018

Those who passed on attending this year’s Capital AudioFest are missing a pretty good show. (And probably watching the death knell for the NY Audio Show.) This year’s Capital AudioFest features some 20 or 30 more new exhibitors/rooms (probably around 80 this year), expansion to the fifth floor of the hotel, more after hours entertainment, etc. This is a show taking the next step toward moving from a regional to national show. From a bunch of DIYers displaying their wares to respected companies—take VPI, KEF and others—making new product debuts.

Attendance today was steady and probably up a bit over last year. Tomorrow will tell the tale and whether the growth in exhibitors is matched by attendance figures. Oh yes. Lots of used and new record dealers here at Capital AudioFest 2018. And of course CDs.

A few tables from the marketplace hawking new and used LPs, CDs, accessories and equipment.

I picked up a few used Steeplechase/Alto Edition lps. Plus a Decca recording of Maazel and the Cleveland Symphony doing the music of Gershwin (SXL 6727). Never seen Gershwin before.

Heard the MOFi soundtrack One From The Heart with Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle in the Tenacious Sound room. We have a real winner if this reissue sounds as good at home as in the MOFI room!

VPI was celebrated its 40th Anniversary with the first public debut of their new 40th Anniversary direct drive table. Four direct drives are at the show; two in the VPI room where attendees can compare a Lyra Etna with the new Soundsmith Hyperion v.2. cartridges. Speakers were the Wilson Alexx speakers (setup by Stirling Trayle) and the new Krell Duo 300 XD amplifier and Illusion preamplifier.

Is the platter really that large or is that some sort of ring clamp?

The Periphery Ring clamp is shown in it's rest position. If you have a warped record or you want to damp the record, the Periphery Ring is removed first, then the record placed on the platter, then the Ring is placed on the periphery of the record. The weight of the ring provides a clamping force which helps flatten many warped records. The performance approaches a vacuum hold down system without the vacuum issues. Some people like keeping the Periphery ring in it's lower rest position on the platter when not in use as it adds to the inertial mass. This is typically a $1000 retail item that is not included as standard in the lower priced models such as the Prime, Prime Signature and standard Avenger and is available for separate purchase.

Great looking table except for the pink stuff sticking out the bottom of the feet. Can that be hidden?

Doshi Audio, Devore Fidelity, Sikorsky Audio (first time shown in the US) from Poland, Transparent Audio, Kuzma and Koetsu were being shown by their dealer Command A/V in VA.

The Devores Super 9s were driven by Nick's new stereo amplifier. Today listened mostly to tape played on a Studer 807 thru Nick's V3.0 tapestage. I will be trying out Nick's new wiring harness between the PS and electronics of both his phono- and tapestage upon my return.

Nick was nice enough to spool up 3 tapes brought along and heard one or two tracks from Mabuchi Trio (Yarlung Records), Folk Singer (Acoustic Sounds) and Work Song (Tape Project).

I do want to get back and hear, though, and hear LPs spun on the new monster J. Sikora Standard Max table!

This was a very nice sounding room especially with tape. I had never heard the Devore's before. I'm sure the Doshi electronics were a major contribution.

Command A/V had across the hall a smaller system featuring Dynaudio Confidence 20 Speakers, NAIM Electronics, Sutherland phonostage and the smaller J. Sikorsky Initial Black table and Kuzma Stogi S CE tonearm. The same glass graphite mat used on this and bigger table.

Wasn't able to get model number of these Wharfedale speakers or electronics but the sound--be it of the headphone variety--was surprisingly good.

Next up on the rounds was the Hi Fi Sales room with Audio Hungary tube electronics, a VPI 30th Anniversary Direct drive table and Audio Technica AT1000 Cartridge and Genesis Advanced Technologies Maestro Speakers. Second time have heard the AT cartridge and for all it does well to in its search for absolute neutrality has just a slight touch of sterileness. Not a warm and cuddly cartridge but that’s not a final verdict.

Pretty good-well maybe some of the best sound was found on day 1 in this room featuring the Daedulus Apollo speakers, the new Wells Audio Commander Level II preamplifier and Inamoratu amplifier, Lampizator Golden Atlantic R2R DAC/Superkomputer and Wywires cables. Certainly best from a Lampi front end at a show. Open, fast, detailed, uncovered and clean.

On A Higher Note brought the Gryphon Audio Mojo S speakers and the Sonett phonostage, Pandora preamplier/Legato phono board, Antilleon Evostereo reference amps. Had a quick listen to tape played back with Sonorus deck and thought the system was richer and more liquid than past Gryphon Audio show sounds.

SOTA is making a concerted comeback in the turntable market with changes to their table's bearing, plinth design, etc.

Better news yet! SOTA will be building and selling the out of production Phoenix Engineering speed controls! Phoenix speed controls (customer choice internal or external) will come stock with SOTA tables.

"Any chance that 3 phase BLDC motor would happen to fit in where a Hurst motor was previously mounted? Wink....."
The mounting holes for the BLDC motor are the same as the Hurst 59mm series, which also fits the Hurst 49mm series (2 hole diamond flange used on the newer VPI Classics), although the mounting flange is thicker on the BLDC motor (.200" vs .063").

I believe SOTA will offer the Condor/BLDC motor in a stand-alone motor assembly that will be similar in price to the ADS, and possibly a motor/controller combo that will fit the Classic and other turntables where the motor is plinth mounted.

Dave Cope/Old Forge Distribution put together a system consisting of Pure Audio Project Reference mono block amplifiers, Control 2 preamp and Vinyl phonostage electronics (from New Zealand), Acapella LaCampanella 2 two way speakers, The Wand tonearm and Wand 14-4 turntable (not shown) (also from NZ). The Wand unipivot arm now comes in 9- (for Rega), 10.5- (Linn) and 12-inch lengths and Master and Plus models.

Guilty pleasure shot: Garrard 401. Purty.

Charlie King in background discovering battery on his tape machine needed recharging. Oh well, tomorrow night is tape night in the Old Forge room.

The vocal contrast between them is like chalk and cheese. The orig 1st press has been a long time audiophile demo disc, I was a fan before it attained that reputation. Ill probably pick up the MoFi edition so I can close the circle to call it a day and not worry about which pressing is best, etc.If you don't already have it, it may become a fave of yours too

Better news yet! SOTA will be building and selling the out of production Phoenix Engineering speed controls! Phoenix speed controls (customer choice internal or external) will come stock with SOTA tables.
I was fortunate to acquire two of each (falcon & Roadrunner) before they called it quits the first time. Good to see someone bringing back the Phoenix line.
