  • Maiden in Munich

I was asked to post what tickled my fancy at the Munich 2016 show. This was my first time at the show. I have never been to any of the other large shows, RMAF, CES, etc. just NYC and DC shows.

Well I have to say that the show overall didn't disappoint. I was there as a guest of an exhibitor so I had access to the show from Wednesday on. Watching what goes into the productions and set-up is fairly amazing. This show is enormous. I've seen numbers like 500 vendors but it sure seems like more. In spite of all that and having 20K people come thru the doors it wasn't the zoo I expected. Most of the hallways are large enough and the rooms are bigger than most hotel rooms so crowding wasn't a big deal. Yeah there were some hallway gatherings that blocked the way but nice overall.

    As far as sound goes, I'll leave my sponsor (Silbatone) out for obvious bias reasons . My favorite rooms making music at the show were in no particular order;

Thrax/Audio Union - overall balance was excellent
CAD/Boenicke - just made an all digital system sound right.
Thomas Mayer/Wolf Van Lange - made a Lowther sound pretty good which in my opinion is not easy.
Illusonic - A marvel of technology that will allow integration of your audio system with video if you don't have a dedicated room.
SoundKaos - Were some room issues but that copper covered speaker has promise.
Broadmann/Electrocompaniet - I have a soft spot for these speakers. Love the tone that comes out of just about any system they are in.
Leedh/Swissnor - Glass?? diaphrams on dimunitive speakers that put out big and clean sound.

There were a few others but I didn't go into this with a mindset of cataloging the rooms so I missed a few and also just spent a little time in some that were either silent or playing music I didn't care for.

There were also lots exhibitors not making music in that their wares were on static display in the atriums. Lot's of new (to me) and interesting vendors not usually seen here in the US. I bought a couple of things to try based on some recommendations that I may report on later. Some magnetic feet for a TT and a $50 MM cartridge that is an underground hit.

It helps that I found a place to eat a short distance away that had good schnitzel and beer so I wasn't much good after lunch some of the days!

Hoping to return in the future as Munich is a nice city that I need to explore more of.

PS Have to make an addition that I forgot about. RHA headphones. My new favorite in ear headphones I have heard. Great overall balance for a great price. I bought a pair of the 20i's

Nice to read that you enjoyed the experience, but maybe more importantly...how was the Schnitzel?

And what $50 MM cartridge did you buy? I'm always interested in budget items that punch above their weight.

Rob, I did not make it over to HiFi Deluxe. I had good intentions but eating those lunches zoned me out and there was plenty to see at the MOC. Viva would have been on my list as I heard both great and bad things about the system so I wanted to hear for myself.

Johnny, the schnitzel was excellent. Tried every variety they had and while they were all good I liked the Munchen which had mustard under the breading. Also Dunkel Weiss was my preferred beverage to wash it down.

The cartridge is a Tonar Diabolique. Generally intended as a DJ cartridge it has something of an underground following in Germany among audiphiles. Some surgery of the plastic bits is required to get the most out of it but I had a friend do that for me while there. Has an output voltage of 8mv (not not a mistype) but otherwise seems unremarkable. If I mount it soon I will report back.

They're out of Holland IIRC? Years and years ago I picked up a MM/MC phono-pre from them to use on a secondary system I had without phono inputs on a Yamaha amp, but wanted to use my kinda vintage Revolver Red TT. It was pretty good for what it cost me and I certainly thought it was good value.
