So with Axpona being a success who has plans to attend Newport? As a newbie how does Newport compare to Axpona in size and exhibitors?

All i have to say is Axpona is by far the best show in the US. And the attendance at Axpona is by far way more than RMAF and Newport.

I will be attending Newport. I haven't gone to Axpona but I have a close friend who exhibits at both in the record rooms and he really likes axpona. With the absence of Richard Beers this year I think Newport is somewhat in question regarding how it will be run but it is still a very good show.

I will be there. Will be staying with family near Pasadena and then driving down for Friday and Saturday. Hope to have the chance to put faces to a few of the names from this site.

I've never been to Axpona but I have attended Newport for the last couple of years. The new hotel last year was a significant step up in terms of in terms of the quality of the facility. But I think that some of the exhibitors struggled to get the sound dialed in. The older hotel(s) used in previous shows seemed to have better sound. Perhaps people just need another year to figure out the tricks of the new facility. I found that there was a good selection of equipment and it was definitely worth the trip down from the SF bay area.

          Leif,

If I'm not mistaken, Newport did 8000 last year, which is already more than this year's Axpona. So Newport is #1 in terms of public. I don't know about # of rooms/exhibitors, though.

Last year was truly incredible. The best audio show I've been to, by far! So we're doing it again this year

I thought Newport attendance was more in the range of Axpona.

Yes I know the numbers they claimed for attendance. All I know is for the last 2 years at Axpona we had more traffic on Friday than we did for Newport or RMAF for the whole weekend. Countless hours standing by the door wondering where everyone is at and I had a couple of rooms there. It's very difficult when you think about the amount of money exhibitors spend to do a show to have an empty room for most of the weekend. If memory serves Saturday was descent with Friday and Sunday being extremely slow. The lobby level saw some decent traffic but nothing like Axpona. The other difficult thing about this show is that it happens to be about an hour away from our factory and how can you not do a show when it is in your backyard. I wasn't going to do Newport this year but we were asked to partner with Constellation Audio so we will be there. I believe the numbers for attendance at Axpona of 6000 attendees but there is just no way Newport had 8000. The halls were packed at Axpona. Every time I looked out in the hallways at Newport I saw the exhibitors in the rooms next to me looking out in to the hallways.

Guess we will see what this year brings. I hope that this year is different.

I don't know if it is true or not but I heard a rumor that JD Events is trying to buy that show

We had 3 rooms last year at Newport, and they were busy the entire time, save maybe for some time on Sunday. It was crazy! We had 4 people to work the 3 rooms, and still it was tough to go out and see the show, so I was only able to cover 6-7 rooms...

Axpona announced 6000 for this year, and Newport announced 8000 for last year. Their numbers. I have no reason to doubt either one, as I was there at Newport.

Speaking of halls, it might've been just where we were, but I usually stepped outside the room, to the hall, to talk to people, not to disturb the music playing. But at some point, even the halls were so busy that it was unconfortable to carry a conversation!

Hopefully this year Newport will be better for you! It's a great show! And I hope to do Axpona next year as well...

                cheers,

Yes I heard the same rumor about JD Events and Newport. It would make sense especially with Richard's passing.

I know that when I arrived in Newport it was mobbed in the lobby. Actually there was some kind of hang up in the badge line. Fortunately, my exhibitor friend in the record room had mine so I bypassed probably an hour wait. I attended RMAF last fall and that is the show I'm not sure will survive. Friday seems to be the busiest day with Saturday falling off a bit and Sunday looked like a bowling ally. I always liked that show and if it falls apart I feel sorry for Marjorie B. She's a great person. One other thing, my record room friend makes the V8 RCM. He sold a half dozen at Axpona this year. I mean money on the table. That is unusual since most of his business is generated thru his website following these events. I'll see you in Newport Alex if not at your store for your one year anniversary! Congrats on that!

Attendance stats between shows may not be comparable (like output voltages of cartridges may or may not be directly comparable). One needs to look below surface level. For example, one really needs to look at discrete attendees. In other words, how does the show treat attendees who buy two and three day passes? As one person or a different person on each day?

Never been to AXPONA so can't really comment.

Re RMAF, we decided not to attend since last year.
It's too big with so many exhibitors for its own good.
Fo as long as I can remember, Sunday has always been a ghost house, especially when there's a game in town or nicer weather since people got better things to do than going to an audio show.

Not sure how long it will survive.

Concerning THE Show, it's in our backyard so it's a given.
Also, Richard was a great guy and a good friend so...why not.
As far as I know, attendance has been increased year after year.

We were on the 11th floor, right behind the elevators. One of our rooms was in the main corridor on that floor, first room to your right (that was the room with Audiopax and Avantgarde).
