  • Kicking Off Day 1

Still on NY time and woke up at 4:30 am and couldn't fall back to sleep. Posted on the BB and met Andre at 7 am for breakfast at the Pancake House. Met fellow audionirvana member Mike Magsig (MikeL here) and enjoyed discussing all things audio at breakfast.

First stop during the pre-show trade hours was the Doshi Audio-Jeff Joseph Audio room. We listened to tape through the JA Perspective speakers accompanied by the new 75 wpc (50 wpc in Class A) Doshi Audio hybrid (FET input/tube output), Doshi V3.0 preamp, Modded Studer 810 with 80 mH Flux heads and Doshi V3.0 tapestage.

Great sound and reckon mids and dynamics will continue to improve by Sunday. Great staging and timber accompanied by a super clean/low noise floor.

Verity showed for the first time their masive, 4 box 4000 lb., top-of-the-line $675K Monsalvat speakers replete with digital xover. These 99 dB efficient speakers were triamped with Verity's 60 wpc Amp-6 amplifiers. The analog front-end consisted of TW Acustics top Black Knight table, Raven 12/10.5 arms and Ortofon Century cartridge. Cabling was provided by the Greek company Signal Projects. All told the system tipped the scales-and then some- at a hefty $1,115,405.

$1,115, 405 -LOL. Gimm'e a break. You know what happens to societies reeling in fantasy wealth/high-life living ?

It's around the corner my friends. Be prepared. History, mathematics, nature itself requires balance. Plain and simple.

Sparing drama for a moment (lol), those of us old enough must realize the deafening ring of expensive gear given birth around the year 2005. Not much prior (1999), we were "eweing", 'ahhing' $5K pre's and $10K loudspeakers.
Being in the business back in 2005, I looked up to the skies and asked: "What's going on here" -the price escalation taking major jumps in/around this time. Good god it continues to escalate.
Rock bottom awaits such flagrant extravagance/spending. Count on it.

The final box will look the same save for having a textured cover. For those wondered why the UHQR releases cost so much? The cover alone costs $15.

Records will be pressed using an improved version of Clarity vinyl that according to Chad is quieter than the plastic originally used by Classic Records.

All 1500 mono versions have been spoken for while 1000/5000 copies of the stereo version are still available. The first UHQRs should be ready to ship by the end of the year.

I also asked Chad when the next pair of 15 ips tapes from Series 2 will be available. Apparently there's again a shortage of blank tape combined with unprecedented/unexpected demand for the first 14 tapes that keeps pushing back the date of the next two tape releases. Asia can't seem to get enough of these tapes and are ordering 10-12 at a time. Who knew but who's complaining? Not I. The greater the demand, the greater the probability Chad keeps on releasing tapes. Perhaps even with this sort of demand some real blockbusters. One can always hope!!!

Let me expand on one point. The record box (each made by hand not to mention tooling for making the dowels) and royalties alone are 1/2 the cost of the album. Then add in another dozen costs and one starts to appreciate why the UHQR’s aren’t inexpensive.

ID:	98702 The Musical Surroundings room with the new Sonus Faber Aida 2s, Audio Research electronics and Clearaudio tables was one of the better sounding rooms today.

I was particularly impressed with the new $1200 Hana M low output (0.4 mV) MC. The new Hana has little in common with its less expensive siblings save the Alnico magnets and features a new Delrin body, high purity copper wire and a new micro line stylus. Of and has a threaded headshell in contrast to the earlier Hana cartridge. I've requested one for review.

Philip O'Hanlon owner of On A Higher Note and US distributor for Gryphon electronics brought along the $52k Pantheon speakers,
the $39k Antileon EVO stereo amplifiers and the brand new $17.5k Zena preamplifier. Today I listened to either a Tape Project or International Phonograph sampler tapes played back on Arian Jansen's Revox/SonoruS PR99.

The sound was much improved over earlier Gryphon demos at last year's RMAF and this year's Axpona show. Smoother, more open at the extremes. Think the dynamics will hit its stride with more playing.

Quick stop here in the Apex Audio room with Piega speakers, Transrotor table/SME/Air Tight Opus cartridge and Air Tight (heard today) and Soulution electronics as there was something really, really, seriously wrong with the sound. Myles: I love your straight-forward no-nonsense honesty. I too, have noted sub-par sound rooms/ demo's (think TAVES 2017, 2016 -all years in fact) indicating a clear lack of expertise; system selection, integration, cabling choice, set-up and AC power considerations,

This does not bode well for prospective consumers; a shitty sounding room/sound for HOW MUCH ???

I'm not picking out this gear/room but rather a general observation made at too many trade/consumer shows.
We won't win anybody over with poor performing (sounding) systems. And at the prices noted, listener's (experienced and novice) will promptly leave/run-out laughing, or crying. Not good.

As everyone in this industry must surely realize by now; there is a severe lack of expertise in the field of high-end audio system integration that by all rights should provide highly resolving, highly natural, expansive, articulate, nuanced (immensely enjoyable) sound reproduction.

We know it exists. We've heard it; some right now at their home's are enjoying it -as I type.
Surely, a few rooms will dominate the scene there -as in every year. These are the one's to note -both gear, accessories, power and the men in charge.

Great honest, opening impressions Myles. Thanks for the update.

I could guess but it wouldn’t be polite.

Another attack on the state-of-the-art featuring the debut of VACs new $150k Statement 450iQ integrated amplifier, Von Schweikert's $200k Ultra 9 speakers, Kronos's $/1k Pro turntable and $15k Air Tight Opus cartridge was on display in the The Audio Company room.

The sound here was far better than past shows with the over exaggerated sound and illuminated sound of the VAC 450Iq amps and VS Ultra 11s. Rich, warm and fast were three qualities defining this system. My main quibble was a slight dynamic reticence that seems common to VAC products. And still 2 days to get better.

Two elevators broke down and the lines waiting for the Tower elevator grew as the day went on. Hopefully they will be fixed by Saturday's crowds. Speaking of crowds. Friday's turnout was as good as it's been in years and bodes well for the rest of the show.

Gideon Schwartz owner of AudioArts in New York had on display the new Zellaton Legacy speakers, the new 150 wpc Ensemble hybrid integrated amplifier, the recently released Thoress Mk. 2 phonostage and the Thales table/Reference arm and Fuuga cartridge. Don't let these small size of the speakers fool you. Thec Legacys continued in the tradition of the best monitors by disappearing from the picture. This was a highly resolving and transparent system that clearly showed the differences between recordings.
