My buddy Tim Leggett asked me to post this item on the board.
I am in Houston and am looking to sell my ATR-102 and tape collection (32 Tape Project/Groove Note). I am moving and need to downsize. Let me know if you would like further details or know anyone who does. I bought it from Greg Orton in 2011, the owner of Flux Magnetics. It has both a 1/4" and 1/2" head stack and will play 1/4" 4 track as well via a 4th head through the Sync function. MRL tapes and other goodies included.
I though the entire deck/tape package might be attractive to someone wanting to really get in on a great machine and some killer tapes out of the gate. But I will sell the machine and tape package separately. I would consider selling the TP and Groove Note sets as separate sets. Two TP serial numbers are #10 and #17 respectively. They have all only been played on the ATR.
One of the Groove Note tapes is out of print (Here’s To Ben). I have the first six titles. I also have 3 TP titles from series 1 in both ¼” and ½“ formats. I was trying to avoid having to engage in a huge amount of shipping. It would be best if the buyer could make the trip to pick it all up, particularly the ATR. I do have a shipping crate, but freight insurance is really inadequate and difficult to get paid on.
As you will read in the attached files, this is a very special machine. It has the Audionic programmable padnets, as well as stock padents, and a direct out harness. The programmables provide instant size/track format/eq switching.
Asking price for the ATR-102 is $11,000. Asking price for the tape set is $12,200. If all purchased together price is $20,000.
I can upload sound samples for serious inquires up to 192/24 made with my Ayre QA9.

I bought my ATR-102 from the owner of Flux Magnetics, Greg Orton, in July 2011.
This tape deck is in perfect outstanding working condition. It is catalog number 4010254-04, serial number 1361052. I believe it was manufactured in the early 1990’s.
It comes with the following items:
This is a true mastering deck. It has the top of the line Flux Magnetics extended response heads in both blocks. Both head blocks are in excellent shape, the ½” head block being brand new and having had maybe a dozen plays. The owner of Flux Magnetics, Greg Orton manufactured the heads and assembled both head blocks for this deck. I am sure your analog decks probably have some of his tape heads in them. These programmable padnets are a must have accessory for this deck. It makes format changes instantaneous.
The ½” 2 track format is truly outstanding. I have 3 Tape Project titles in both ¼” and ½” format and the difference is really night and day. The ½” format reproduces exactly what you put into it.
Let me know if you are interested in the deck for your facility. I also have a collection of Tape Project Tapes and Groove Note Tapes I want to sell. I can send you a sampler of stuff I have mastered with it and an Ayre QA9 ADC converter. I have samples up to 192/24 bit resolution. Asking price is $11,000.

It comes with the following items:
- ¼” Flux Magnetics Extended Response Head Block and Tape Guides built by Greg Orton –Allows play/record of 2 (½ track) track format, playback of commercial 4 track (¼ track) format in one direction.
- ½” Flux Magnetics Extended Response Head Block and Tape Guides built by Greg Orton –Allows playback/record of 2 track format. Brandnew.
- 2 - Stock Ampex Four Speed Padnets – For playback/record alignment of tape speed (3¾, 7½, 15,30 IPS) and equalizations (IEC, NAB, AES)combinations.
- 2- Audicon Programmable Padnets – For playback/record alignment of tape speeds (3¾, 7½, 15, 30IPS) and Equalization (IEC, NAB, AES) combinations. Provides a PC computer software interface for saving and loading saved alignments (switching speed/track/eq formats) in seconds. Allows 2 alignments per speed. These Padnets have much better audio characteristics than the stock padnets and allow instantaneous switching of formats, which is not possible with the stock padnets. The have a great many functions including graphing play/record frequency response and automatic playback and record alignment. I am using them and the software with Windows10.
- The unit and saved padnet configurations are already calibrated for all speeds and formats withRMGI SM 468tape.
- Alternate XLR connector for sound card direct output, which bypasses the I/O moduleand transformers for a much improved sound for digitalmastering.
- Precision Motor Works Mag Reels NAB hub adapters (for ¼” and ½” reels) as well as thestock adapters.
- Wood shipping crate built by Greg Orton.
